‘I got my first ink at 14 and have no regrets – people stare but I don’t care’

A woman who started getting tattoos when she was 14 hopes for more – and also has plans for extreme body modifications.

Marília Barrionuevo, 27, from São Paulo, Brazil, is a former body piercer, plastic artist and mum to her daughter Annika.

She was only 13 when she started stretching her ears and a year later she got her first piece of ink.

She told Daily Star: “For as long as I can remember I have always been into tattoos and piercings.

“My older sister had piercings, and for me, that was the coolest thing. So at 14, I got an old-school rose with an anchor right on my shoulder.

“I loved the design and felt such a bada**, it actually helped with my self-esteem. Looking back now I feel like I was quite young to get tattoos done but I have no regrets.”

Marília roughly covered 50% of her body in tattoos, stretched and also pointed her ears, which she achieved through surgery, but she wants more.

One that is on her list is body suspension, which is the act of suspending a person from large-gauge hooks which are carefully placed through temporary body piercings created immediately before the act of suspension.

It's a tradition that dates back thousands of years and was historically strictly performed for sacred, ritualistic purposes.

“I did it once back in 2016 and that was one of the best experiences I have ever had,” she explained.

“I would like to get my tongue split and also redo the cheek piercings I had before, those are on my list.

“And of course, I want to get more tattoos. It feels like the more you have the more you want to fill in the blank spaces.”

Marília loves her tattoos, which include a mythical creature on her neck and a blackwork piece on her left arm, but some of them were incredibly painful.

She explained: “The most painful one has to be my palms. It was a quick one but way too painful. My neckpiece was also very painful, it was a long six-hour session.”

Thankfully Marília says she’s never experienced any judgment from people for being a mum with tattoos.

That being said, she does receive a lot of attention from strangers.

“I get a lot of looks and stares when I am out with my baby. It’s probably just plain curiosity or maybe we just look too cool to stare at,” she said.

“Who knows what they are thinking? But prior to that, I got people crossing their fingers at me out in the street which is very disrespectful.

“In general [I’m not trolled]. I think people who follow me are into tattoos and body mods as well.

“The one that got on my nerves the most was when I posted a reel from my maternity shoot. At that time, I was very emotional, had low self-esteem and I was basically always on the edge.

“Anyways, this dude got very offended that I was showing off my bump, I got a ‘what kind of role model are you portraying to your unborn child?’ That one got to me at that time.”

Over the years Marília developed thick skin so simply ignores the haters.

Now all she cares about is that her loved ones are happy and healthy, all while keeping true to herself.

She added: “It’s a cliche thing to say but haters are gonna hate, be your authentic self.”
