Instagram and Facebook are being encouraged to "free the nipple" and let people show their boobs in saucy snaps.

A board that advises the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, Meta, has urged the social media giant to lift its ban on pictures of bare breasts.

At the moment women are not allowed to show their boobs in full, or expose their nipples in pictures, but there is a want for the ban to be lifted.

Meta’s Oversight Board comprises of academics, journalists and politicians who act as advisors to the company on issues such as its policies around content moderation.

It's recently emerged that the brand's policies have the potential to be more inclusive, and the board is urging Meta to change its current policy that prevents users from sharing images of bare breasts on its platforms.

People may be aware that the #FreeTheNipple movement has been prominent for around a decade, and wants such policies to be binned.

It's said the board advised the company to alter its rules around nudity and sexual activity on social media platforms "so that it is governed by clear criteria that respect international human rights standards".

Discussion around the topic is said to have taken place after Facebook censored two posts from an account that were shared by an American couple who identify as transgender and non-binary.

The posts showed the couple posing topless, but they did cover up their nipples.

They shared the image to try and raise money for top surgery, but some users reported the posts, which meant they were removed by the brand’s AI system.

Despite the removal, the snaps ended up being restored after the couple made an appeal to Meta.

It's been reported that the current policy regarding bare breasts on Instagram and Facebook "is based on a binary view of gender and a distinction between male and female bodies".

Rules are also said to be "unclear" when it comes to people who identify as transgender, non-binary and intersex users.

According to Yahoo!, the board suggested Meta needs to "define clear, objective, rights-respecting criteria so that all people are treated in a manner consistent with international human rights standards".

Meta has since said it "welcomes" such comments, adding: "We are constantly evolving our policies to help make our platforms safer for everyone.

"We know more can be done to support the LGBTQ+ community, and that means working with experts and LGBTQ+ advocacy organisations on a range of issues and product improvements."

In recent months, various celebrities and influencers have risked social media bans with their racy posts.

This includes OnlyFans star Lottie Moss, "world's hottest gran" influencer Gina Stewart and boxing star Ebanie Bridges.
