Viewers of Interior Design Masters were enraged last night as they accused the judges of ‘fixing’ the contest for one contestant to win.
Designer Monika Charchula, from Nottingham, appeared in the final yesterday alongside fellow contestant Jack, as they were tasked with transforming a pub in Brighton.
Monika painted the walls and ceiling of the pub and covered the bar itself in a gold leaf, as well as adding extra lighting to the space.
And while the judges praised Monika’s ‘bold’ and ‘courageous’ design, many of those watching were left stunned when they announced she was the winner.
One commented: ‘I think Michelle had a soft spot for Monika, which is why she kept her in. She wanted her to win.’

Another wrote: ‘Sorry Michelle, but you lost the plot here. How on earth could you decide Monika was the deserving winner?
‘Was it the tears that did it for you over Jack (and Tom’s) talent?
‘Very disappointed. No next season for me.’
A third added: ‘Jack was the real winner. No harm or disrespect to Monika but her bar was smaller and not as well finished.
‘Jack absolutely smashed it and it looked incredible.’
‘I’m sorry but I’ll not be watching if this is the kind of judging we’ll see,’ another wrote. ‘Monika never won a challenge.
‘She didn’t even realise that she had an outside to do in one challenge so threw some sticks together and the judges loved it! Are you kidding me!’
One commented: ‘What an absolute disgrace! The credibility of the show has gone!
‘Monika’s design was awful, minus the bar. She papered the ceiling and a column.
‘Jack absolutely smashed it. Michelle even said she was skilled and consistent whereas Michelle had enthusiasm.’
Another added: ‘WTF? How utterly bizarre. Jack was by far the best and most consistent designer throughout.
While the judges praised Monika’s ‘bold’ and ‘courageous’ design, many of those watching were left stunned when they announced she was the winner
‘There’s been some very strange judging decisions this series. I feel like Monika was steered to the final.
‘Without Alan Carr, the show wouldn’t be worth watching.’
When Monika saw the pub space she would be transforming, she confessed she felt intimidated.
She met with Libby, the manager of the spacious and traditional pub, The Fountain Head, who told her she wanted to be ‘more lively and current.’
Libby said: ‘It should feel like one big happy family, which is how it should feel.’
Monika enlisted the help of former contestant Tom to transform the space, before she told the team she planned to paint all the ceilings and walls in a dark blue.
Meanwhile she cleaned up the bar before fitting out the space with gold leaf.
Monika said: ‘To create a day to night pub is definitely tricky. We need to play with zoning.’
After the first day, she admitted she ‘didn’t know if she was on schedule because she didn’t have one.’
However she was able to finish the space on time, revealing she had taken part in the competition because she wanted to prove to herself that she could be an interior designer.
After the makeovers, the judges praised Monika’s ‘bold’ and ‘courageous’ design which saw her painting the ceiling and wallpapering a column
After she was announced the winner, Monika confessed she was blown away and said she never dreamed of winning the show
Michelle said she loved the gold bar as well as the way she had wallpapered a column and the ceiling .
The judge said she had ‘modulated’ her own style for the brief.
When the pub was revealed to Libby, she was blown away, saying: ‘It definitely appeals to a younger customer.
‘The only thing is I think we might need some more chairs because I think it’s going to be quite popular.’
As the judges deliberated who would win the programme, Abigail Ahearn said: ‘I was obsessed with that bar. I felt a real sense of excitement when I walked in, It really lifted my spirits.’
Meanwhile Nisha Katona said she felt Monika’s ‘boldness and courage in her design.’
Speaking to the judges, Monika said: ‘I tried to play with colours, darkness and light, so I put a lot of new lighting to create ambience to create zones and spaces.
‘I wanted people to feel the space was inviting and warm, but also a little bit private in places.
‘And then I needed the bar to have a wow factor.’
Meanwhile speaking of her time on the competition, she said: ‘The beginning was rocky but I would love to have interior design in my future.’
And when Michelle announced she had won the context, Monika admitted she was blown away.
She exclaimed: ‘Never in my wildest dreams, I never thought this would happen.
‘This is the start of something new, something exciting and something big.’
