Karine Aigner was yesterday announced as the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. She won with her remarkable image of a crowd of male cactus bees competing for the chance to mate with a female fresh out of the nest.
It shows a “ball” of suitors rolling over hot sand on a Texas ranch, the solitary female at its centre.
Karine’s entry was the overall Grand Title award winner in the Natural History Museum’s renowned annual competition.
Rosamund Kidman Cox, head of the judging panel, said: “The sense of movement and intensity is shown at bee-level magnification and transforms what are little cactus bees into big competitors for a single female.”
Other stunning images showed flamingoes on Bolivian salt flats, an elderly mountain gorilla in the Democratic Republic of Congo and polar bears investigating an abandoned village on Kolyuchin island in Arctic Russia.
Museum chiefs will unveil the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition on Friday in London.
