The official England Rugby Instagram account shared a video of Princess Kate wishing the best of luck to the Red Roses before they embarked on their Rugby World Cup journey. Body language expert Judi James analysed Princess Kate’s body language and speech, and revealed that her latest video gave “major clues” as to what kind of Queen will be.

Kate Middleton became the royal patron of the Rugby Football Union in February this year, taking over from Prince Harry.

She said in a short video clip: “Hello everyone. I wanted to take a moment to wish the Red Roses all the very best of luck for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

“I had so much fun with you all at Twickenham earlier this year and I cannot wait to see how you get on during the tournament.

“For many of the team, this will be the first World Cup you’ve played in. Congratulations on being selected for the squad.

“I know this will be a particularly proud moment in your career so far, and I hope you enjoy every minute.

“I was also delighted to hear that some of the winning squad from 2014 are back to help bring the cup home again.

“Good luck for the weeks ahead. I’ll be setting my alarm clock early to cheer you on all the way.”

But according to Judi, Kate’s less-than-a-minute message was so much more than simple well-wishes.

In fact, Judi claimed: “If anyone wants to get a glimpse of the type of queen Kate will become in the future this short but quite dramatically different video provides some major clues.

“She does smile but it’s with her mouth stretching horizontally rather than tipping upward in the traditional ‘royal’ smile and this in turn makes it look more congruent and more personal.”

This is a big change for Kate as the Princess has honed her royal smile to “perfection”, Judi previously suggested.

She continued: “Her eye contact is good and her slight head tilt adds to the feeling of energy and movement rather than a static display.”

“Gone are any self-effacing signals and in their place is a more mature, assertive woman who looks more of a leader than someone whose key job is to just stand alongside her husband.”

Despite the video only really displaying Kate’s head and shoulders, the expert noticed that her whole body was moving behind the screen.

She explained: “The real ‘tell’ that reveals her sense of serious energy, status and power though comes from her use of the heel-bounce to emphasise her points.

“She bounces up and down onto her heels frequently in this brief message and the effect is to inspire the teams in a very firm and emphatic way.”

This firm and emphatic speech was only compounded by her choice of clothing, according to the expert.

As opposed to anything whimsical, the Princess opted for a red jacket and rose lapel badge – “businesslike” as opposed to just “charming and friendly”.

Kate’s voice was just as telling as her body language and facial expressions, according to Judi.

She concluded: “Her vocal tone is slightly lower, giving it a more serious and commanding effect.

“Kate’s voice can be high and quite delicate but this is far more assured than usual.

“Her vocal emphasis on the words ‘good luck’ in ‘Good luck in the week ahead’ is said with much more power and less humour than usual.”
