A massive moggy who weighs more than a four-year-old child has found a new owner in just one day.

The chunky cat, named Patches, tipped the scales at 40lbs, when he was rescued by an animal shelter in Richmond, Virginia, earlier this month.

An animal shelter posted snaps of the portly puss yesterday (19 April), and retiree Kay Ford instantly stepped forward after falling in love with him within hours.

Richmond Animal Care and Control took him in on April 4, but only put out the appeal 15 days later.

Patches now will get a new lease of life under the loving care of Kay, who can’t get enough of his fluffy frame.

A spokesperson for the shelter said: ‘We love that belly’ as they shared the appeal on social media.

One of the shelter’s staff could be seen carrying Patches and showing off their belly in a picture.

‘Did you wake up today and say “let’s adopt the largest cat anyone has ever seen?”‘ his adoption appeal read.

‘If so, we have the cat for you. Meet Patches, all 40.3 pounds of him.

‘He’s been on a very special diet, is on an exercise plan and is very sweet.

‘He’s neutered, tested, chipped and ready to go.’

Vets say the average weight of a domestic cat, depending on the breed, is around 10 lbs.

A four-year-old child weighs 37.4lbs on average.

New owner Kay Ford fell in love with the curvalicious feline as soon as she saw him and applied to take him home

The shelter are delighted that it took less than a day to get Patches to a new loving home and have shared the moment on social media

Kay drove to the shelter and adopted Patches before anyone else could fall in love with him and take him away from her

The moggy’s impressive belly is 10 inches large and earned him a lot of attention on social media

The shelter got Patches on April 4, but waited two weeks to put him up for adoption, sharing his appeal on April 19

The cat proved so popular that he was adopted by his new loving owner less than 24h after his appeal went live

Kay told local media: ‘I saw the picture of Patches and I just knew immediately I needed to go and get him.

‘I knew that there were going to be nine billion people who were falling in love with him at the same time.’

Kay, who already owns a cat called Wellesley, lives a short drive from the shelter and was able to stake her claim before most other interested parties.

She arrived at the shelter a couple of hours later and met Patches in the flesh.

Carefully set up in his cage, Patches was eagerly waiting to be taken home by Kay, who was delighted to have found her cat

Patches is settling into his new home, where he took his quarters on a fluffy pillow. He will live with Kay, her family, and her other cat, Wellesley

Kay said: ‘He started purring right away.

‘You just look at him and you go “That’s my cat”.’

Despite his enormous size, Patches is not the heaviest cat ever recorded.

The Guinness World Record for ‘fattest cat’ went to 10-year-old Himmy back in 1986.

The Australian cat weighed an astonishing 46.07lbs before passing away later the same year.

Guinness World Records dropped the title in 1998 to prevent owners from overfeeding their cats.
