Meghan Markle, 41, releases new episodes of her Spotify podcast Archetypes every Tuesday. In today’s episode, the Duchess of Sussex interviewed Issa Rae, an American actress and comedian.
Meghan shared plenty of tidbits in the episode, such as taking a genealogy test and discovering that she’s 43 percent Nigerian, and also her opinions about the racist trope – the ‘Angry Black Woman’.
Judi James, a professional voice analyst and body language expert, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk to analyse the latest Archetypes episode.
She said: “Meghan’s life story seems to be dropped in many parts each week on her podcasts. Each one that comes out seems engineered to reveal some new detail or fact of her life and it is those ‘reveals’ that seem to hit the headlines even more than the points she is discussing.
“They also seem to promote the feeling that we are being invited to get to know her piece-by-piece, like a huge jigsaw puzzle.”
In this podcast, Judi argues that there are “three key Meghan reveals”.
She explained: “With this podcast we get three key Meghan reveals or glimpses, although these ones are much lighter on the tears and sadness over her own suffering and pain and either more upbeat and positive or more suitable for the gossip mags.
“With a theme of the trope of the ‘Angry Black Woman’ Meghan tells us with noises and laughter of delight that she has discovered that she is ‘43 percent Nigerian’.
“It has been a hugely positive discovery it seems as she says she had been told by fans that it is ‘huge for our community.'”
Judi notes that this revealing episode of Archetypes gave royal fans a glimpse into Meghan’s “domestic life with Harry”.
She claimed: “As well as this reveal we get a more domestic one of her life with Harry when she says she took a book home from a party ‘in my purse’ and read it in bed with Harry.
“This is possibly the first time a UK audience has ever been given any glimpse of any royal and their bedtime habits since Michael Fagin broke into the late Queen’s bedchamber and she was there alone.”
The Duchess also spoke about the things she stopped consuming when she married into the British Royal Family.
Judi explained: “There is also a ‘break’ in the recording where we are allowed to hear Meghan and her guests chatting as though off-mic and she reveals that she stopped drinking coffee while she was in the UK.”
Meghan asked Issa in the episode: “Was there a point in your life, and maybe it still happens to you now, because of the archetypes, especially as a black woman, do you feel that you’re allowed to be angry in certain moments?”
The actress replied: “Absolutely not. Because I can’t lose my cool, I can’t do that, especially as a black woman, but also just even as a public figure now.
“Because people are looking for ways to justify their perception of you. That doesn’t mean I don’t get angry.
“That might mean that I will vent my frustrations to someone that I trust, get it out of my system and then go into fix mode.
“And I think even personality-wise, I’m always like, I don’t want to sit in my anger too long anyway because what does that do?
“I want to work on fixing something, but I want to be allowed to have that emotion because it’s a natural…like, it’s an emotion.”
The Duchess also recalled her acting days, complimenting Issa on creating “nuanced, layered, multifaceted women” in her shows.
