Meghan Markle and Kate, Princess of Wales are well and truly under the royal magnifying glass, with their every move and pose analysed by fans. Body language expert Judi James spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the gesture that unites the royal women – and the one which divides them totally.
Both Kate and Meghan are used to being in front of the camera and present themselves extremely well in public.
However, Meghan’s acting past has enabled her to hone a skill that Kate has not quite mastered, according to the expert.
Judi told Express.co.uk: “The women do have some very subtle but powerful differences in their body language habits when appearing in public though and the biggest difference tends to come from their eyes.
“Kate tends to play it straight with her eye expressions, creating a regal effect rather than a series of individual-looking connections.
“Her eye expressions, like the late Queen’s, are to be enjoyed by watching rather than joining in a non-verbal communication.”
Kate does not necessarily communicate with her eye contact, showing “very little in terms of any change of mood”.
The only glimmer of communication in Kate’s eyes, according to Judi, is the occasional “flash of firmness in between the very charming eye smiles”.
Kate’s more reserved eye expressions are where she differs from Duchess Meghan, claimed the expert.
Judi suggested that due to her craft, she has been able to nail down how to communicate via the eyes.
She said: “Meghan will tend to use a more directly communicative eye expression that ‘talks’ to the cameras, appearing to engage us in a more one-to-one communication.”
And while Kate’s body language gesture can be seen as mirroring the late Queen’s, Meghan’s mirrors another royal, Diana.
“These eye tie-sign signals are a trait that Diana used frequently to bypass the normal formality of being royal and to seem to share jokes, thoughts and moments direct with the public.”
Before she married Prince Harry, Meghan was an actress, most famously playing paralegal Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits.
Judi explained: “Meghan’s years as an actress will have helped develop this eye communication trait as she will have been used to picking out the cameras and very relaxed at ‘speaking’ straight into them.”
Kate, on the other hand, did a stint working at the Middleton family business Party Pieces, and was also an accessories buyer for Jigsaw, neither of which set her up for learning to talk to the camera.
“Actors and models are trained to see the camera as a person and to respond accordingly, whereas royals tend to see the cameras as something that follows their every move to log their lives rather than joining it.”
Aside from this big difference in body language, Kate and Meghan display several common gestures frequently when in public.
Judi said: “Meghan and Kate share some very similar body language traits, like the signature hair touching at the side of the face that will display wedding and engagement rings as well as being a preening ritual.”
This is coupled with “the exaggerated elegance of their regal sitting positions, with the back upright and the diagonal slant of the legs”, coined the “Duchess slant” after Kate.
Judi concluded: “Both women increasingly appear now as independent units using confident body language displays when they are promoting their own causes, with the lack of any handbag to create a barrier and with their arms hanging down at their sides.”
