The cast of Neighbours are coming to terms with the iconic soap coming to and end, with the stars considering what to do next.

After 37 years on the air, it was announced this year that Australian soap Neighbours had been axed, devastating fans across the world.

The final episode will air on Monday, August 1, and while it’s a sad occasion there have been some massively exciting surprises promised for the finale.

From the return of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to the almost equally iconic Harold Bishop returning to help a grieving Mackenzie, it’s ironic that the show is having a major ratings boost now that filming on the production has stopped.

Loose Women panelist Janet Street-Porter, who had a cameo on the show in 2019, headed all the way to Melbourne to speak with the cast of Neighbours ahead of its final episode.

The series of interviews aired on Tuesday’s episode of the ITV panel show, and saw Janet grill Stefan Dennis, who plays Paul, on what his plans are for the future.

Stefan – who has been a regular character since the show’s very first episode – admitted he is still feeling ‘numb’ about it all.

‘I’m in the numb period at the moment,’ he admitted. ‘I’ve got my head in the sand a bit at the moment.’

Asked what he will do when the show ends, Stefan said he would ‘semi-retire.’

However he added – looking directly into the camera with a knowing grin – ‘I’m leaving myself open to any jobs that may be forthcoming!’

Janet reminded Stefan of his short-lived music career (His track Don’t It Make You Feel Good hit number 16 in the UK charts in 1989), but the actor didn’t seem ready to jump back into pop.

‘If I was to release a record now, it would be me sitting by the fireside with my slippers,’ he joked.

The star also spoke of the massively anticipated return of Scott and Charlene, and confirmed they had already filmed their scenes, adding ‘it was absolutely fantastic.’

‘We had all the legendary characters… in one scene and it was great. There was no awkwardness at all, even though we hadn’t seen each other for a while we had a blast of a day filming. It was really great.’

And, asked if Scott and Charlene were still married, Stefan wasn’t interested in leaving fans hanging, as he answered easily: ‘Yes, of course they are!’

He wasn’t giving it all away however, as when asked what happens in the final episode, he said simply: ‘You’ll find out.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Neighbours executive producer Jason Herbison said that while they were of course ‘sad to see it go,’ they were ‘ending on a high.’

He said it was ‘clear’ to him how to end the show, and assured viewers there was a ‘very warm return’ for Scott and Charlene.

‘They got a very big kick out of it, it was nostalgic for them to be back on the street, and I think the viewers are going to enjoy it too.’

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
