Pantone has finally revealed the colour of the year for 2023: Viva Magenta
Think pink.
Pantone’s Colour of The Year has been announced, and Viva Magenta 18-1750 is the hue that will be taking us into 2023.
According to Pantone’s executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, it’s a colour that ‘vibrates with vim and vigor’ – and frankly, after the 2022 we’ve all had, we’re here for that energy.
Each year the colour matching company announces the year’s new shade – and it’s a very big deal.
The annual colour reveal is meant to represent and set the mood of the new year – and it trickles down into everything from fashion and homeware to nail shades.
According to Pantone, Viva Magenta 18-1750, ‘welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all’.
We can get on board with that.
And this year’s bold hue is a level up in terms of wow factor from last year’s pick, Very Peri, which was described as a ‘dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet-red undertone’, supposed to sum up a moment of ‘transition.’
It’s also a far cry from the joint winners of 2020 which saw a bright yellow – Illuminating – and a coal grey – Ultimate Grey – take the cake.
Leatrice Eiseman, added: ‘PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.’
