A passenger who refused to swap seats with a mother on a flight so she could sit next to her toddler has sparked debate over airline etiquette.

The traveller was aboard a flight from Japan and was sitting next to the window with the child in the middle seat, and the mum was in the row directly behind also in the middle seat.

The unimpressed passenger detailed the situation on Reddit that’s now resurfaced online and wrote it’s ‘not my problem they didn’t book together’.

‘She asked me – and just me – to switch with her so she could have my window seat (next to her daughter) and I’d take her middle seat a row back,’ the anonymous passenger wrote on Reddit.

‘Hell to the f**k no.’

‘Worse is we were surrounded by others from her tour group that she could’ve asked for a three-way trade instead. Or the tour operator,’ the traveller continued.

‘The audacity to ask just me and expect an inferior trade on my side.’

The Reddit thread gained hundreds of comments from others and opinions were divided about what the passenger should’ve done.

‘Sure, someone else could move, but either way someone has to move or someone has to sit next to a flying toddler,’ one said, but then criticised the traveller for being annoyed at ‘a mum trying to watch her own kid’.

‘Why were you so eager to sit next to a stranger’s toddler daughter,’ another added.

A third outline the plane ‘rules’ the swear by.

‘My rule of thumb is: 1). Will only change an aisle for an aisle (my preference). 2). Will never change an aisle or a window for a middle 3). Will never change if I had to spend extra money to get my seat,’ the person wrote.

‘I just started refusing altogether. Unless it’s for an upgrade,’ another agreed.

Another added: ‘I’m sick of entitlement from people and it seems elevated on planes and even more so of late.’

‘I don’t know you, I don’t generally care about you beyond reasonable human compassion. And I certainly am not responsible for your poor planning. Don’t talk to me again and go away.’

Sarsha Petterson, from Melbourne, slammed passengers with complicated food orders, those who refuse to follow instructions and people who change their babies on food trays.

The 20-year-old gets particularly annoyed with passengers who treat cabin crew rudely, and those who are uncooperative and stubborn.

A surprisingly common habit is passengers choosing to change their baby’s nappies on the tray table, and acting outraged when they are not allowed.

‘You can’t actually change your baby’s nappy on that tray table, because people eat off of it, and there’s also people sitting next to you, it’s quite unhygienic,’ she said, mimicking conversations she has had with passengers.

Another annoying issue she encounters with parents is when they refuse to put the seatbelt on their baby because they are sleeping.

‘She does need her seatbelt on because as we descend it does get quite bumpy and I wouldn’t want her to go flying in the air and then come down and hit her head on something,’ Sarsha said.

A major pet peeve is when passengers demand for the flight to be quicker.
