Royal Mail customers in England face further postal delays
Royal Mail deliveries were disrupted over the weekend due to the bank holiday on Monday, May 8. While business was expected to resume as normal today, the postal service has issued an update of postcodes that could face further delays. Households in parts of England have been warned that they may have to wait longer for parcels due to arrive on Tuesday, May 9.
Royal Mail aims to deliver six days a week throughout the year though this schedule is often impacted by bank holiday dates.
This was the case on Monday, May 8 when the service paused all collections and deliveries to mark the Coronation.
But despite the event now being over, postal deliveries are still subject to delays.
In their latest update, the postal service explained that “not all mail was processed and despatched to schedule over the weekend”.
Royal Mail operates an air, rail and road network to move letters and parcels between its distribution hubs, mail processing centres and delivery offices around the UK.
However, road delays over the weekend affected mail in transit from the North West England hub.
On their website, the update read: “On Saturday, a vehicle travelling to our York Distribution Centre from the North West Hub arrived later than expected. This meant some mail missed connecting outbound services.”
As a result, some mail posted on Friday, May 5 may arrive later than planned.

Affected postcodes include those expecting mail that was sent on Friday from the North West of England – (Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside).
Royal Mail noted that processing issues over the weekend also affected Carlisle Mail Centre.
Post sent across the UK on Friday due for delivery in the CA (Carlisle) and DG (Dumfries and Galloway) postcode areas are subject to delays as a result.
In addition to transit disruption, local offices are also impacted.
In a small number of local offices, their six-day-a-week delivery target may “temporarily” not be possible due to local issues.
These include high levels of sickness absence, resourcing, and other local factors.
When this is the case, Royal Mail explained that the solution is to “rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers”.
Postcodes currently affected by such issues are widespread across the UK.
These include:
- Bridgwater DO (TA5, TA6 and TA7)
- Clevedon DO (BS21)
- Erskine DO (PA7 and PA8)
- Faringdon (SN7)
- Melrose DO (TD4 and TD6)
- Sandhurst DO (GU46 and GU47)
- Weston-Super-Mare DO (BS22, BS23 and BS24)
