Shoppers go wild for halogen ovens as cheap cooking alternative

As Britons search for ways to save money on bills, many people have been looking into energy-effifcient methods of cooking.

So far, the humble air fryer has emerged victorious, with cooks raving about its results in cooking family dinners.

From chips to casseroles, and even cakes and biscuits, it seems you can cook just about anything you want in an air fryer.

The air fryer is currently a shoppers’ favourite, with lots of people unable to find an appliance in shops because so many models are sold out

Much cheaper to run than a traditional oven, and also able to cook most things with minimal oil, people are reaching for their air fryers to cook healthy and cheap meals.

However, as many air fryers sell out across the UK, some shoppers have been doing extra research into other alternatives – and another contender appears to be emerging.

The halogen oven, which is also fairly cheap to run, allows you to see your meal cooking in real-time in its glass bowl.

They retail at around £50, with the more expensive models costing more like £100. 

It uses halogen bulbs to cook food, meaning that, as with an air fryer, only minimal oil is needed.

The Newcastle Chronicle quoted research by Utilita in August this year, which revealed that annual savings of an air fryer could save up to £279.66 per year.

The air fryer costs approximately £55.91 per year, compared to gas cookers which cost an average of £121.06 a year, and electric cookers at £335.57 per year. 

The newspaper quoted a shopper who has been relying on air fryers for years, who said: ‘Had a few halogen ovens in the past, This one beats them all. It’s digital, the lead can be removed from the lid, works brilliantly and saves lots of fuel as you are only heating up a small area instead of a large oven.’

Similar savings could potentially be made from halogen ovens, which use significantly less energy than traditional ovens.

Whereas a household oven uses around 2400 watts on an average heat setting, a standard halogen oven will operate at a much lower level of around 1300 watts.

According to the Halogen Oven website, you can roast, steam, toast, defrost, bake and boil in the appliances.

It also claims to be able to cook meals in record time, significantly more quickly than a traditional oven.

Overall, it is estimated that halogen ovens are around 75% cheaper to run than a traditional oven.
