Tess Daly’s make-up artist shares glam secrets – including £6 lip that lasts all night

Whether it’s drinks and nibbles with the neighbours or a big New Year’s Eve bash, the chances are you’ll have some social occasion this month that gives you cause to root inside your make-up bag a little deeper than normal.

One person who certainly knows a thing or two about putting on the glitz is professional make-up artist Aimee Adams, whose handiwork we’ve been seeing on our screens every weekend as she’s part of Tess Daly’s regular glam squad, getting the TV presenter into full glitterball mode for Strictly Come Dancing. We asked her to share her pro secrets to create this sophisticated yet sparkling look that anyone can master.

Prep your skin first

“Good skin prep will make your make-up last longer and lay smoother,” says Aimee. To start, she gave our model for this shoot under-eye patches to wear for a few minutes, then massaged in a hydrating serum.

Use your everyday face base

There’s no need to buy a separate “going out” foundation – even if you only wear light coverage during the day, this can be applied in thin layers and built up if required. “I don’t like seeing foundation on the skin,” says Aimee. “I only used a tinted moisturiser on our model, so that it still looks like real skin. Then I used a pigmented concealer where needed, and a brightening one under the eyes.”

Opt for a peachy blush

Aimee used a glowy cream blush to add warmth and definition. “A peachy colour flatters everyone, and is really nice for warming up the face a little bit, especially in colder months.”

Enhance your eyebrows – but naturally

Our model’s brows were given subtle definition using a pencil, then brushed through with a clear brow wax. “A fuller brow generally is more flattering and youthful,” Aimee says. “I like them brushed up softly but not like they’re Pritt-Sticked to the forehead.”

Don’t be scared of a smokey eye – but stay away from black

“People are unsure about doing a smokey eye but it’s easy – and looks much cooler – if you just do it roughly and don’t use a million brushes,” Aimee says. “Smudge with a finger and clean up with a cotton bud if you need to. And stay away from matte jet black – doing a smokey eye with something so dark and pigmented looks awful on most people. I prefer using rusty copper colours.”

Match your make-up to your outfit

“One thing I do a lot for Tess on Strictly is to add a little of her outfit’s colour into her make-up,” Aimee explains. “Tess wore a purple jumpsuit for Halloween week and so I applied a little metallic purple eyeliner. Or you could use a navy mascara if you’re wearing deep blue, for example.”

Turn any eyeshadow into an eyeliner

There’s no need to buy bagfuls of eye pencils when an eyeshadow can be easily turned into a liner, says Aimee. “Inglot Duraline [£10 here] is brilliant – mix it in with any eyeshadow you want to create a gel eyeliner. Using water doesn’t work – it doesn't pick up the pigment and will just turn your pan of make-up crusty.”

Use a peach eye pencil

Here Aimee used a light-coloured pencil on the inner lower lash line to help to open up the eye. “It’s very subtle, but it’s like concealer for the eye, and it kills off any red tones,” Aimee says. “Go for a peach shade – white can look too stark.”

Go for cream shadows

If you’re doing a strong lip like here, you can keep the eyes simple with just a sheer wash of shimmer or glitter, says Aimee. “Creamy or gloss shadows give the nicest dewy finish and can be patted on with fingers. They will crease – but just take a pointed cotton bud and remove any build-up.”

Save your cash

“I’ve found some of my best make-up in pound shops, and some of my favourite cream eyeshadows in the world are Collection Cosmetics ones, which cost less than a fiver,” Aimee says. “Cheaper make-up usually gives a thin wash of colour, but that’s what I want. I like layering fine veils of product – it looks better and lasts longer.”

Layer up your lips

If you’re doing a bold lip, apply different layers of colour to intensify the colour and help it to last longer. For this shoot Aimee used three different products to create this statement red: “I started with a stain, then lined the lips with a make-up felt-tip pen, before going over with a satin-finish lipstick.”

Set with powder instead of setting spray

Aimee isn’t a big fan of setting sprays (“I think a lot of them feel like hairspray on your face”), preferring to set make-up with a translucent powder instead. She also likes to dust a tiny amount around the mouth before applying lipstick to stop it from bleeding into fine lines.
