The Apprentice’s Lord Alan Sugar’s huge net worth and how he made his millions

A defiant Lord Sugar has assured fans that he’s not going anywhere ahead of this year’s The Apprentice finale, that airs on March 23 at 9pm.

The successful businessman, who was recently rocked by a star quitting the show, said that “a lot of people underestimate me” and that he could easily go on doing 20 or 25 years on the hit reality show.

So far, he’s fronted all 17 series of the programme.

The 75 year old also explained that he was “very fit” for his age and that finding someone to replace him on The Apprentice could end up meaning the show would “kill itself off.”

Alan Sugar did concede, however, that if they went on a ten year hiatus before bringing it back with “new characters” the show could wind up with a successful revival.

The star has certainly never shied away from his business success, and is thought to be worth a staggering £1.2 billion, ranking him as the 138th-richest person in the UK.

His immense wealth comes from a series of diversified business ventures including property, electronics and more.

The star’s very first business was Amstrad which he launched back in 1984.

At the time it sold a number of small electronics including car radios and TV aerials, but became a smash hit when it launched its’ very own personal computer.

Just two years after the launch, in 1986, the company’s estimated value had exceeded a billion and had made its’ founder an extremely rich man.

In 1991, the businessman bought sports club Tottenham Hotspur with pal Terry Venables and started a few more electronic businesses, including TV service YouView and digital company AmScreen.

The company, which is named after his initials (Alan Michael Sugar Trading), was sold to BSkyB in 2007 for £125m.

He then branched out into property when he founded an investment company with his son Dan, Amsprop.

All of his varied business interests have contributed to his huge wealth and he also earns a salary from the BBC for his role on The Apprentice, whose winners have produced everything from failures to ten million pound businesses.

It’s not known exactly how much he gets paid for his TV appearances.

Nonetheless, it’s been reported that – however much it is – Lord Sugar doesn’t save a penny of it and instead donates the full fee to Great Ormond Street Hospital, which specialises in helping sick children.
