The most outrageous celebrity fashion moments of 2022

If nothing else, 2022 proved Rihanna is the world’s hottest mama, Kim Kardashian can still break the internet and Heidi Klum remains the undisputed queen of Halloween.

Between the Grammy winner’s marvelous maternity wardrobe, the Skims mogul’s Marilyn moment at the Met Gala and the supermodel’s squirm-worthy worm costume, however, there were plenty of other celebrity fashion moments that went viral this year.

From jaw-dropping red carpet getups to made-for-social-media runway reveals, read on for a look back at the style statements that had everyone talking in 2022.

Rihanna’s perfect pregnancy reveal

The Bad Gal kicked off the year on a high note by announcing she was expecting her first child with partner A$AP Rocky in January — and baring her baby bump in a pink Chanel puffer coat paired with baggy blue jeans and plenty of designer bling. (Highlights included a vintage Christian Lacroix cross pendant and an archival Chanel chain belt.)

And while Rihanna may have set the bar high with her first pregnancy look, she never let her foot off the gas in the months that followed, stepping out in a series of incredible outfits ranging from sheer Dior lingerie to a latex crop top from Gucci.

Nicole Kidman’s polarizing pleats

Of all the magazines that hit newsstands this year, none sparked sartorial controversy quite like Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue, which featured Nicole Kidman modeling Miu Miu’s itty-bitty pleated bra top and micro-miniskirt on the cover.

The 55-year-old Oscar winner’s skin-baring schoolgirl look split social media in February, with some labeling her look “horrible” and “creepy” while others called the cover an “absolute serve.”

Kidman later revealed that stylist Katie Grand had initially set aside a different outfit for her shoot, but that she “begged” to wear the sexy Miu Miu separates.

Julia Fox’s DIY denim duds

2022 was a banner year for the “Uncut Gems” muse, whose whirlwind relationship with Kanye West — which included a $100,000 dress-up date, matching moments at Paris Fashion Week and a quintet of birthday Birkins — made her a style star worth watching.

“Juliye” might not have lasted much longer than a month, but Fox continued to prove she’s a fashion force to be reckoned with, daring to wear everything from a flaming “pyro coat” to the world’s lowest-rise pants in the months that followed.

She also established herself as quite the craftswoman, fashioning a cutout dress from a beach towel and — our favorite — a denim bandeau and hip-huggers from a single pair of high-rise jeans.

Harry Styles’ rainbow sequins

It’s “Harry’s House” and we’re all just living in it. 2022 saw the release of Styles’ third studio album, his 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden and his first time headlining Coachella. And while the colorful costumes for his string of NYC shows were predictably stellar, nothing captivated fans quite like the rainbow sequined Gucci jumpsuit he chose for his performance during the desert music fest in April.

Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn moment

Less than a decade after being cropped out of Vogue’s Met Gala red carpet coverage, Kardashian’s become one of the annual event’s most anticipated arrivals — and this May, she got everyone talking by showing up in Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress from 1962.

Hollywood historians were horrified to see Monroe’s gown hauled out of a museum and risking damage for the stunt; others criticized Kardashian’s “strict” pre-gala diet and exercise plan in order to fit into the historic garment. Still, there’s no denying her look dominated the headlines on Met night.

Florence Pugh’s nipple-freeing Valentino

Like her co-star Styles, Pugh spent much of 2022 wrapped up in the drama surrounding “Don’t Worry Darling,” but she also managed to deliver some headline-making fashion moments — chief among them the oh-so-Barbiecore gown she wore to the Valentino Haute Couture show in Rome in July, which happened to be completely sheer up top.

When trolls descended, Pugh defended her dress in a lengthy Instagram post, writing, “It isn’t the first time and certainly won’t be the last time a woman will hear what’s wrong with her body by a crowd of strangers, what’s worrying is just how vulgar some of you men can be.”

Added the actress, “Why are you so scared of breasts?”

Brad Pitt’s breezy skirt

The Hollywood hunk proved real men wear skirts at the Berlin premiere of “Bullet Train” in July, where he beat the summer heat in a brown linen version by Haans Nicholas Mott that divided social media.

Asked to explain the flowing ‘fit, Pitt told Variety, “I don’t know! We’re all going to die, so let’s mess it up.”

Jennifer Lopez’s trio of wedding dresses

Two decades after their breakup, Bennifer finally made it official — first with a private ceremony in Las Vegas, and later with a lavish celebration in Georgia.

For the latter “I dos” in August, J.Lo wore not one, not two, but three custom Ralph Lauren gowns: a turtleneck column with a dramatic ruffled train, a chandelier-inspired look dripping with pearls and a sleek mermaid style with a keyhole neckline and sheer organza hood.

Taylor Swift’s “Bejeweled” mini

The pop phenom proved she can still make the whole place shimmer (and keep her Swifties on their toes) when she made a surprise appearance at August’s VMAs, clad in a crystal-covered Oscar de la Renta creation.

In addition to ensuring all eyes were on the star, the sparkling dress pulled double duty as one of her infamous Easter eggs: That very night, Swift would announce her new album “Midnights,” featuring a track titled — what else? — “Bejeweled.”

Lil Nas X’s flamboyant feathers

The “Old Town Road” hitmaker’s no stranger to stealing the spotlights on red carpets, but his hair-raising VMAs ensemble by Harris Reed — comprised of a towering halo-style headdress and hoop skirt, both adorned with jet-black feathers — might have been his best look yet.

If the theatrical ensemble looked familiar, it’s probably because Reed crafted a similar head-turning getup in gold for Iman at the 2021 Met Gala.

Timothée Chalamet’s backless halter jumpsuit

Few young stars have fun with fashion quite like Chalamet, who showed up at the Venice Film Festival premiere in September wearing a back-baring Haider Ackermann look with a scarf-style neckline.

Fans were quick to hail the “sluttification” of the actor’s style, which had always blurred gender norms but settled into something more skin-baring in 2022.

Anne Hathaway’s salute to Andy Sachs

Hathaway had plenty of headline-making style moments in 2022, but none went viral quite like the getup she selected for the Michael Kors show during Paris Fashion Week in September, which was striking similar to the one her “Devil Wears Prada” character wears in the 2006 flick’s closing scene.

Adding to the uncanny resemblance, the actress paired her brown croc-embossed leather coat and black turtleneck dress with Andy-style bangs — and the fact that she was seated in the front row alongside Anna Wintour, who inspired the story’s icy editrix Miranda Priestly, was the cherry on top of it all.

Hathaway later insisted her “DWP” homage happened “by accident,” but we’re not buying it.

Bella Hadid’s spray-on couture

Fashion folks can be pretty jaded, but jaws dropped during Coperni’s show at Paris Fashion Week, where Hadid closed the catwalk wearing a white Fabrican dress that had been sprayed onto her body in front of the crowd. Could this stuff be the fabric of the future?

Heidi Klum does the worm

The supermodel’s dreamed up some pretty spooky (and sexy) Halloween costumes over the years, but she may have outdone herself for 2022, when she wriggled onto the red carpet at her annual bash dressed like an enormous earthworm.

“It’s hard for me to move. I don’t really have arms or legs,” she told Page Six Style at the time. “When I fall over I need someone to help me get back up. I’m kind of stuck in it, you know? It feels a little claustrophobic.”

Somehow, the look became even creepier when Klum shed her slimy costume to reveal a sparkling nude mesh catsuit — but kept her worm face on.
