Sawgrass always produces tons of drama, especially the par three 17th, the famous island hole.

Even though it is only around 140 yards, depending on where they stick the flag, that hole is literally swimming in golf balls by the end of the tournament.

You can even bet on how many water balls the pros will rack up over the four rounds, although that number is heavily dependent on how strong the wind is.

The record for a single day was set in the opening round in 2007, when FIFTY balls ended up in the drink.

But that was in a howling gale, and with no fierce winds forecast this week – apart from gusts strong enough to make things interesting on Friday – a total in the mid-high 60s might be close to the mark this time.

Strangely, the players who filled the top three places at Sawgrass last year – Cameron Smith, Anirban Lahiri and Paul Casey – are all absentees, after taking the money offered by LIV Golf.

But the PGA Tour have ensured they will not be missed by sending out the best three golfers on the planet in the same group for the opening two rounds.

The odds on the winner coming from that trio are pretty low. It features the two men favouritism at 8-9 to 1, Rory McIlory and Jon Rahm, with Scottie Scheffler next best in the betting at around 11-1.

They are clearly the men to beat, but there are plenty of players who will fancy their chances of taking down the Big Three.

The biggest threat could come from 20-1 shot Max Homa, who is now at a career high seventh in the world rankings.

Will Zalatoris also looks comfortable here – and on any other courses where birdies are not handed to you on a plate.

Seven of his eight rounds at The Players have been sub-spar, and he will surely improve on his previous finishes here, which were both just outside the top twenty. So odds of 33-1 look tempting.

Keegan Bradley is another horses for courses fancy, at around 45-1. His share of fifth last year was his second top ten at Sawgrass, and some bookies are paying as much as 12 places this week.

And if you want to have a big outsider on your side, you could do worse than 200-1 chance Nick Taylor, despite his missed cut at Bay Hill last week.

He actually started well with a three under par 69, showing his undoubted putting prowess, but was all over the place as he shot 79 on day two.

That was uncharacteristic of a man with a runner-up finish and a seventh in his last six starts. So at big odds he is worth a small interest.
