WHSmith worker is told he’ll be ‘fully investigated’ for calling in sick after his request for time off for Eid was ‘declined’ – but outraged Twitter users label it ‘discrimination’

A WHSmith employee has claimed he was told he would be ‘fully investigated’ for going off sick after his request for time off for Eid was ‘declined’. 

Mahie, thought to be based in the UK, shared a screengrab on Twitter that seemingly showed his manager explaining that because he had said he was unwell on the day he requested as holiday, the situation would need to be investigated.

His post on Saturday has since been retweeted more than 4,000 times, with outraged social media users labelling the manager’s ‘threat’ ‘discrimination’. 

In follow-up messages, Mahie – who claimed he was handing in his notice due to the situation – said he was ‘genuinely ill’ and actually ended up celebrating Eid on Friday, the day before his original holiday request. 

Mahie showed in another screengrab how he had messaged the WHSmith Twitter page. He was told ‘we will endeavour to investigate this matter thoroughly and look to provide you with a response in due course.’

Taking to his social media account, Mahie captioned his post: ‘Getting investigated is crazy.’

He shared a screengrab of a conversation with a contact titled ‘Manager’. The message received by Mahie read: ‘Hi Mahie, sorry to hear you are unwell, as it is Eid and you requested this time off but was declined, as per your conversation with Agsa, we will need a sick note, alternatively if you take the correct medication you should be able to attend this afternoon.

‘If I feel better I’ll try come in a bit later. My doctors is closed so I’m just taking medicine,’ replied Mahie.

However, his manager wrote back, according to the screenshot: ‘It’s up to you but you will need a doctor’s note as this will be fully investigated.’

Some Twitter users were disgusted by the situation, with one person writing: ‘Hate discrimination I tell u.’

Another said: ‘How would they feel if they had to work on Christmas? Your employer should support festive holidays not discriminate against you.’

A third wrote: ‘They can’t investigate nothing bro and they can only demand sick note if you’re off for more than 7 DAYS.’

However, one person on TikTok, after the tweets were shared on that platform, wrote: ‘Everyone missing the point that it can be investigated as they are ill on a day they had rejected for holiday. Companies will investigate it.’

Reaction: Some Twitter users were disgusted by the situation, with one person writing: ‘Hate discrimination I tell u.’

However, one person on TikTok, after the tweets were shared on that platform, wrote: ‘Everyone missing the point that it can be investigated as they are ill on a day they had rejected for holiday. Companies will investigate it.’

In later tweets, Mahie said he ‘genuinely ill’. He added: ‘I celebrated Eid on Friday and I only wanted Saturday off just in case Eid was that day.’

After the Ramadan month of fasting, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr with prayers, feasts and family visits.

Mahie continued: ‘Handing in my notice tomorrow, guys don’t worry,’ after also saying: ‘I’d like to point out I asked for a shift swap with a non Muslim girl and someone else asked for a shift swap with a non Muslim and he straight up said “no”.’

Mahie also late revealed: ‘I think they’re investigating my manager back. Let’s see if they even do anything though,’ after he apparently reached out to WHSmith.

‘We will endeavour to investigate this matter thoroughly and look to provide you with a response in due course.

A WHSmith spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We respect the religious views of all of our colleagues. We are currently investigating this matter fully with our colleagues and will address all concerns raised.’
