If you’re checking social media while waiting in line to vote today, you might notice posts alerting you that there’s a Blood Moon on Election Day. But what does that mean, exactly?

What’s a Blood Moon?

Go ahead and press play on Taylor Swift’s new song “Glitch” (“Nights are so starry, blood moonlit…”). A Blood Moon is one name for the Full Moon during a total lunar eclipse. And it’s easy to see why: During a total lunar eclipse, the Full Moon appears reddish as the Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, passes over it. (FYI: Lunar eclipses always take place during a Full Moon.)

You might also see some sources calling this Full Moon the “Beaver Blood Moon,” “Frost Blood Moon,” “Freezing Blood Moon,” or another name. “Beaver Moon,” “Frost Moon,” and so on are traditional names for any Full Moon in November, whether it’s during a lunar eclipse or not. As the Farmer’s Almanac explains, these names come from “Native American, Colonial American, or other traditional North American sources passed down through generations.” Every month’s Full Moon has various traditional names.

So there’s an eclipse on Election Day?

Yes! To be exact, the lunar eclipse in Taurus occurred on November 8, 2022 at 6:02 a.m. This is the last eclipse of both the fall 2022 eclipse season and the calendar year.

In astrology, eclipses are considered to be fated events that propel us towards our destiny. They’re a time when life-changing occurrences take place, for better or worse. This energy doesn’t just affect the exact moment of the eclipse, but the days before and after it as well.

What does the Blood Moon mean for Election Day?

Astrologer Monisha Holmes explains that the aspects (or angles) the lunar eclipse forms with Uranus, Pluto, and the dwarf planet Sedna indicate that “the Blood Moon eclipse is not one to take lightly. The political implications of this election will result in one side needing to accept a long-term surrender.” She adds that the fact that this eclipse is taking place in Taurus, traditionally considered a a feminine sign, points to the way this election will have long-term consequences for abortion access and reproductive justice.

Don’t get me wrong: An eclipse does not mean that you’re helpless. In fact, just the opposite. “An apathetic approach to voting is a decision! This final eclipse in Taurus is not the time to let others decide for you,” Holmes says. “The political choices made during this election will be fixed on the face of this country like a tattoo. Willful ignorance and learned helplessness make victims, not survivors.”
