DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN I discovered my niece was a sex worker, I was horrified.

She said she had been doing beauty treatments, but it turned out she was secretly having sex with men for money and advertising herself on escort sites.

She is 19 and has struggled emotionally and financially since leaving school. She has very low self-esteem and mental health problems.

I’m 50. In desperation, I wrote to you asking if there was anything I could do to help her.

You told me to talk frankly with her, saying I knew the truth and feared she was putting herself in danger. You also recommended I contact the NSPCC (nspcc.org.uk, 0808 800 5000), who could help her as a vulnerable adult.

In addition, you gave me your Raising Self-esteem support pack to help her.

She was angry and in denial at first, but she has started to listen and to open up.

She has stopped prostituting herself and her GP has referred her for mental health support. And I’m helping her to access job training.

I’m so grateful for all your advice.
