Yellowstone fans had been desperate to watch 1923 since the first prequel, 1883, came out in December 2021. This latest drama tells the tale of another generation of Duttons, as well as the brother of 1883’s James Dutton (played by Tim McGraw), Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford). From the rise of Western expansion to prohibition and the Great Depression, it was a difficult time for the USA, including the Dutton family.

Was 1923 on Christmas Day? What happened?

1923 made its debut on Paramount+ Sunday, December 18, in the USA and then the following day in the UK.

On Sunday, December 25, fans assumed there may not be a new episode airing of the prequel as it was Christmas Day.

However, the festive occasion didn’t stop the show from carrying on as its schedule intends.

There was no break so episode two, Nature’s Empty Throne, was shown on December 25, as planned.

In the first episode, Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) was shot at by a sheepherder which led to a full-on war between them and the Yellowstone cowboys.

Episode two saw Jack, Jacob and Jack’s dad, John Snr (James Badge Dale) out for blood and strung up the trespassers while sitting on their horses so if their animals were to move, they would die.

All of them were killed bar Banner (Jerome Flynn) who insisted that he wasn’t the one to shoot at Jack.

The Yellowstone men end up handing over the sheep to the Native Americans as an act of goodwill to try and keep the peace.

Elsewhere, Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), who is in Africa, was being attacked by a leopard during a safari and while he survives, one of his guides is fatally injured.

It is later revealed that the leopard was a female and the man in charge of the camp, Richard Holland (Nick Boraine), knew there were two leopards but failed to inform them.

He didn’t apologise for his friend’s death initially but did so at gunpoint with Spencer stating he wouldn’t kill him because he needed a ride to Nairobi the next day.

Spencer takes a break from his work with the Protectorate by having a drink at the fancy hotel nearby.

It is here that he meets a pretty British woman called Alexandra (Julia Schaepfer) who is there to celebrate her engagement.

The pair have a flirtatious encounter though and Alexandra tells a friend that she doesn’t want to marry her fiancé.

The following morning, Spencer is about to be driven off when Alexandra spots him, picks up her bags and chases after the car.

She calls off her engagement and drives off with Spencer, excited for a different adventure.

It’s a very different story for Teonna (Aminah Nieves), on the other hand, who is among the young Native American girls attending the government boarding school.

They are being cruelly treated and are given maggots in their food and when Teonna says in her native tongue that she’d rather be hit than eat this, she is hit for misbehaving.

Teonna fights back and for this, she is locked in a box as a punishment and left there for hours.

Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle), who is sporting a black eye, later states that if she ever laid a finger on her again, she would kill Teonna.

1923 airs every Sunday on Paramount+ in the USA and every Monday on Paramount+ in the UK.
