Antiques Roadshow is a BBC favourite and in a classic clip from Wollaton Hall, expert Raj Bisram shared his thoughts on a guest’s signed photo. Former footballers Vinnie Jones and Paul Gascoigne appear in the image which has become known as one of the most famous photos in football history. The guest was surprised to hear the picture could be worth thousands of pounds at auction.

Antiques Roadshow expert Raj could not contain his excitement when he saw the black and white snap of Jones and Gascoigne.

The photo showed Jones grabbing hold of Gazza’s groin as he attempts to fend off the attacking midfielder.

“What an iconic photograph you have brought in,” Raj told his guest, who had a personal connection to the photo.

The guest shared: “I was the referee at that match, it was on my birthday, funnily enough.

“It was a first division match between Wimbledon and Newcastle United.”

“I have to admit, I didn’t see that incident,” he laughed as the expert observed the unfortunate positioning of Jones’ hand.

“I mean if you had seen that incident, obviously you would have booked Vinnie Jones, yeah?” he asked.

The referee agreed, saying: “I suppose it would be ungentlemanly conduct.”

Monte Fresco, a former photographer known for his humorous snaps from sporting events, took the classic image.

The referee added: “When I retired from work my colleagues, unbeknown to me, got Jones and Gascoigne to sign it for me.”

This may well have added to the astonishing value of the fantastic photograph, which could have been worth up to £3,000.

Raj explained: “I guess if you were to put this on the market today I would be estimating this between one and three thousand pounds.

“It could go anywhere because it’s a one-off, this is one of the most famous photographs of footballing history, thank you for bringing it in.”

The guest pulled a face suggesting he was taken aback by the value of the photo and was unable to get any words out.

He was clearly blown away by what he had heard, as there is no other image like it.

The book Our Gazza: The Untold Tales explains the story behind the famous photograph.

Jones said: “As a Newcastle free-kick was being taken, I didn’t want Gazza to move forward towards the ball.

“As we’re jostling, he suddenly said to me: ‘You’re earning your £100 today.’

“It was meant as an insult, so I just grabbed him by the you-know-whats and it was spot-on. There was no messing.

“It was straight on the button and I didn’t let go.

“The match ended up 0-0 so I suppose everyone was glad the grab happened because there wasn’t much else to talk about.”
