Anton du Beke swaps Strictly for DIY as he joins Nick Knowles for big project

Anton Du Beke breaks down over death of Strictly judge Len Goodman

Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton Du Beke, Katya Jones and Graziano Di Prima are swapping sequins for hard hats as they join Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS The Big Build team in Newcastle.

Usually seen waltzing across the dancefloor they will instead be mucking in on site to help transform the True Colours Performing Arts School.

The school is an inclusive space, which teaches dance and theatre skills to 500 children and young adults weekly, many of whom have disabilities and learning needs.

With so many pupils, the school has completely outgrown its current space and there’s a waiting list to join.

They have been given a bigger space in the form of an old boys club to use as a premises.

Unfortunately, the building currently has there’s no electricity, heating, natural light or, most importantly given the school’s ethos, disabled access, and as a small charity they have limited funds in order to renovate it.

Enter DIY SOS who, along with the Strictly stars, are going to help them transform it into a suitable space for their worthy and transformative work.

The Big Build sees the team undertake renovation projects that have life-changing effects for those involved.

Host Nick Knowles is looking forward to the challenge of renovating the club into a space fit for a dancing queen or king.

“This Performing Arts School really needs a transformation, they do an excellent job in Wallsend and if we can help them grow so they can accept more students, then we’re going to go above and beyond,” he said.

Meanwhile Strictly judge Anton is thrilled to be able to give people the opportunity to learn to dance.

“Myself, Katya and Graziano understand the power of dance and how it brings people together.

“This could really transform not just the building but the community too,” he said.

“We are thrilled to help out and bring some Strictly magic to the proceedings. And who knows, we may see a future Strictly star in our midst!”

The school’s founder, Alisar-Jane was inspired to create the group after being diagnosed with ADHD and Autism as an adult, and her love of dance helped her through her diagnosis.

When her niece was then diagnosed with a life-limiting condition as a toddler Alisar-Jane was determined to take her to dance classes.

However, she found a lack of fun and accessible groups to attend, and so True Colours was born.

DIY SOS The Big Build will be on BBC One later this year.
