BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty forced to apologise for ‘disrespectful’ interview

BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty was left red-faced during an interview with Eurovision runner-up Sam Ryder – as her co-star Charlie Stayt put his foot in it.

The presenter was chatting to Sam about his BRIT Awards nominations, with the singer expressing his surprise at seeing his name up there.

Charlie couldn’t help remarking, however, that he was up against some “serious names” – making Naga cringe.

The host told Sam: “There’s some serious names. You know, he’s up right up there with some serious credential artists. No disrespect to Sam.”

Both Naga and Sam seemed to take it in stride, however, as both broke down laughing.

Naga snapped: “Seriously, when you say no disrespect there was no way!” before turning to Sam to say: “Sam, I apologise.”

Charlie interrupted her: “Sam knows what I mean, let me explain!

“As Colin said a moment ago, Eurovision has not been considered serious music credentials.

“It’s almost set apart isn’t it? And now, low and behold, Sam comes in and given a totally different thing.”

Thankfully Sam took the encounter and subsequent explanation in his stride as he commented: “It’s treated like a different world so this is so cool, I think, for the future of it.

“Like Maneskin for example, they have taken over the world, blazing the trail in the genre of rock music and heavy music.”

He added: “So it’s so cool for the institution of Eurovision as well as the team behind our project.

“Just so grateful to be there and like you say, the names in this category, Kojey Radical, Rina, Wet Leg, it’s very good musicians.”

But with a self-deprecating giggle, Sam added: “So basically, I don’t stand a chance.”

Naga reassured him: “You’re being spoken about Sam, so that’s what counts!”

It comes after Charlie was warned by bosses “three times” to calm down during Breakfast filming.

Joking with Mike Bushell about getting his "game face" on like the roaring Southhampton manager Nathan Jones, Naga quipped: "That's Charlie every morning."

Charlie then confessed: "I've been told three times to calm down this morning. My enthusiasm has been watered down. Otherwise I would have been like that."
