BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty shuts down co-host Charlie Stayt in ‘awful’ row

BBC Breakfast turned tense as presenter Naga Munchetty shut down her co-host Charlie Stayt during a row about GCSE results.

The hosts were discussing results day on Thursday (August 25), when students across the country will be opening their brown envelopes after a return to exams post-pandemic.

Following a live report from a high school, Charlie commented: "We'll be catching up with those students later to see how they got on. Very exciting day!"

But Naga was quick to shut him down as she pulled a face, telling him: "You say it's exciting, I found it nerve-racking. Awful."

Turning to sports correspondent Chetan Pathak, Naga continued: "Morning, Chetan. How was it for you?"

She added: "I still get, you know that flutter in your stomach? That awful feeling of anticipation, anxiety…"

Chetan commiserated: "I still get recurring nightmares that I haven't handed in my A-Level coursework. This is years later."

Charlie quizzed him: "Have you handed it in?" as Chetan chuckled: "I think I have! I still get that sense of relief, when you wake up and think, 'Thank goodness it was only a dream and I did hand it in'."

He went on: "I don't think I'll ever quite lose it."

Things turned even more awkward later in the programme, as Chetan made a bee pun which failed to land with Charlie.

Discussing the new mascot for the Rugby League World Cup, RugBee – which was designed by nine-year-olds – Chetan giggled: "They had another preference, but in the end they went with plan 'bee'."

A confused Charlie questioned: "What was the preference?" as Naga rolled her eyes, asking him: "Oh, didn't you get it?"

"I spent all morning thinking that up, I'm out of bee puns," Chetan confessed. "Charlie's not impressed."

Blustering, Charlie insisted: "I have got it! I've got it now. It's better when someone doesn't get it, isn't it?"

But Chetan wasn't pulling his punches as he replied: "No, it doesn't land. Naga getting it made me feel a bit better. If there'd been stone cold silence…"
