BBC Breakfast's Sally Nugent slammed by viewers for 'silly' weather question about downpours | The Sun

BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent has been slammed by viewers for voicing a “silly” weather concern about there being “too much rain” for crops.

On Monday morning, BBC Breakfast co-hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay discussed the UK’s weather, which has this week gone from heat and drought warnings to flood and thunderstorm warnings in some places.

According to Jon, 52, UK residents can expect a “deluge of rain” in the coming days.

Responding to this comment, Sally, 51, asked the BBC’s Alexis Green, who was reporting from a field of crops in Hampshire, how this would affect the crops.

“We know the crops need water, but are they actually going to get too much of it?” she asked.

But Alexis confirmed that too much rain isn’t an issue at the moment because the ground is so hard because of the heatwave.

“Possibly not, no Sally,” she said. “The water which does fall from the skies could just run off the ground as it’s very dry at the moment.”

She also explained that drought has caused a very real problem in England, as the Environment Agency has moved eight out of its 14 areas into drought stages.

Yorkshire has had the driest period in 150 years, going back to when records started, Alexis added.

However, Sally and Alexis’ exchange did not impress viewers, and many slammed the BBC Breakfast host for her “silly” question about over-watering.

One viewer said: “I take it the [people] on the BBC didn’t sleep too well last night.

“Their imagination is in overdrive so they’ve come up with a new crisis. Can’t wait for the flash floods. I suppose I could buy a cheap dinghy.”

A second commented: “So light rain, showers, heavy rain, are all the wrong kind of rain. Sun is a #ClimateCrisis Anyone would think @BBCNews want to make a drama out of everything and make it negative?”

A third viewer said: “BBC just said it’s the wrong type of rain coming during a drought as it might cause floods. Can someone please tell me what kind of rain we need because I thought there’s only the wet stuff?”

“I’m not sure what the difference is between light rain and showers, but that just sounds like a typical British summer to me,” a fourth commented.

Other viewers were confused by Sally’s line of questioning, saying it’s a “blessing” to finally see the rain.

“Finally! Much needed. Although there is a risk of flooding because the ground is so dry,” one viewer said.

“No more complaining about rain… It’s a blessing to have any at all,” another added.

Back in the studio, BBC Weather correspondent Carol Kirkwood confirmed that the UK would see heavy rain and thunder pushing eastward, with a high risk of flooding in some places.
