BBC viewers blast BAFTA TV Awards over cringey and inappropriate opening
Celebrities have begun to arrive on the red carpet ahead of the Bafta TV awards
DJ Jax Jones and singer Calum Scott took to the stage perform their song, Whistle.
DJ Jax said: “Big up Kate Winslet” before performing the track which also saw dancers dressed as fish on stage.
Unfortunately the BAFTA TV Awards opening performance didn’t enjoy it and many took to Twitter to question if it was “appropriate”.
@bowes_louise posted: “This start is very cringy and most of the audience look uncomfortable #BAFTATVAwards.”
“So random to have a random pop song to open the show and just cutting to all the celebs who are very much just sat still awkwardly watching #BAFTATVAwards,” @AMG_Review tweeted.
@LelJoyce asked: “Is this opening song a tribute to Finding Nemo? #BAFTATVAwards.”
@amiescool posted: “This audience dead faced is killing me #BAFTATVAwards.”
@taraspring added: “Why are the TV Baftas opening with a DJ set/song? Sooo awkward. Audience sitting there not knowing how to react. #BAFTATVAwards.”
“I’ve never seen a performance be less appropriate for an occasion hahaha – the audience reaction shots were toe-curling #BAFTA #BAFTATVAwards,” @nickoverheard tweeted.

@ben5909 shared: “#BAFTATVAwards What was that appalling open song with the fish heads?”
After the performance came to an end, hosts Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan took digs at the BBC, the Gary Lineker controversy and Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s visit to the late Queen’s lying in state.
Poking fun at the This Morning hosts, Rob pointed at Imelda Staunton and joked: “She’s nominated for her performance in The Crown.
“Apparently, Holly and Phil got to watch that a couple of days before everybody else.”
Romesh added: “A little bit of edge for you, early doors.”
Joking about Gary’s suspension from Match of the Day, Rob continued: “A few months back we were left hoping that The Traitors would be making a swift return to BBC One.
“Well that’s what some of the papers called the Match Of The Day presenters anyway.
“Are we edgy? I think we might be edgy.”
BAFTA TV Awards airs on BBC One on Sunday at 7pm and is available to catch up on BBC iPlayer.
