Beyond Paradise star defends Archie and Martha ‘romance’

Beyond Paradise: Martha tells Humphrey about not wanting children

The Death in Paradise spin-off has kept BBC viewers hooked as they watch the romance of DI Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) and Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) continue six years after leaving Saint Marie. However, Beyond Paradise fans have had mixed feelings about Martha’s ex-fiancé Archie Hughes (Jamie Bamber) trying to throw a spanner in the works.

As both characters arrived in the fictional Devonshire town of Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown, BBC viewers were introduced to a range of new characters.
With Humphrey getting stuck into work with the local police force, Martha decides to follow her dreams by opening up her own cafe called the Ten Mile Kitchen.
However, as she was struggling to get the capital for the place, her helpful ex-fiancé suggested he join her as a partner.
Although it’s clear to Beyond Paradise viewers her past lover still has feelings for Martha which could mean trouble ahead for her and Humphrey.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media, actor Jamie Bamber touched on his character in the BBC show.

When asked how he feels about some fans thinking Archie is the “bad guy” trying to come between Humphrey and Martha, the actor defended his role.

He said: “There’s no bad guy in this, they’re all there, they all like Martha. They both like Martha and they want what’s best for her.

“Obviously Humphrey and Martha aren’t going great, they’re going through a very difficult change of scenery.

“They’re trying to have a family, that’s not working and human beings unravel at those moments.

“I don’t think Archie’s a bad guy for- not proposing an alternative solution, but for being there.”

Jamie highlighted how Archie is confident in different aspects to Humphrey which may determine why he thinks Martha is better off with him.

The BBC star continued: “He’s confident in his work but in his personal life, Archie sees someone who prevaricates a bit and thinks, ‘well, maybe he’s not right for Martha, maybe there’s another outcome’.

“It’s not a given, they’re not married, and there’s nothing else at stake, so I don’t think he’s a bad guy.”

In the most recent instalment of the show, viewers saw Archie try and shoot his shot with Martha while at her cafe.

Telling her he could see how unhappy she was and questioning whether or not she wondered if there is something still there between them, he went in for a kiss.

However, Martha pushed him away and slapped him around the face just as Humphrey walked in the door, unaware of what he interrupted.

A synopsis for the next episode teases the attempted kiss could be playing on her mind as she has some things to think about.

It reads: ”Panic spreads throughout Shipton Abbott when an arsonist targets three local businesses, scrawling the word PIG at the scene of each fire.

“Humphrey and the team are baffled until they realise the fires follow an unusual pattern by invoking the Three Little Pigs fable.

“A reluctant Kelby is called on by an eccentric local to investigate a break-in, but soon realises that this might be the key to solving the arson case. Elsewhere, Martha has some serious thinking to do.”

Beyond Paradise continues Fridays on BBC One from 8pm.
