Since first airing in 1960, fans of the ITV soap have gotten used to seeing familiar landmarks within the Weatherfield world. From the Rovers Return to Roy’s Rolls cafe, viewers have watched the drama unfold throughout the cobbles. However, as of next month, there’s a whole new batch of places for mishaps to happen in Coronation Street.

Despite the precinct being mentioned for decades in the soap by various characters who pop off to do some shopping, it’s never actually been shown in the show.

Although that’s all about to change as of next month as viewers will finally get to see what the fictional place looks like.

On Thursday, the popular soap unveiled the latest edition to the Weatherfield universe where many favourite characters will be seen taking shopping trips.

The official opening of the precinct set was attended by some of the Corrie cast including Sally Dynevor, Antony Cotton, Jimmi Harkishin and Daniel Brockelbank.

Channique Sterling-Brown, Elle Mulvaney, Tanisha Gorey, James Craven and Colson Smith were also present to officially declare the Weatherfield Precinct open for business.

The building for the new exterior set started nine months ago and after almost a year of waiting, the cast will film their first scenes there next week.

However, viewers may have to wait a little longer to see it on TV screens as the episode featuring the precinct won’t air until January 13.

The two-storey construction will feature maisonettes, a staircase and a balcony leading to the properties above while a series of local shops underneath.

Viewers will see new places such as a candy store called Sweety Nuff, a pawn shop called Bargainanza and a charity shop titled the Gregory Pope Foundation.

In the centre of the precinct will be a children’s park and play area which will have swings and a roundabout to add an extra location for filming.

The new set will allow scriptwriters the chance to make the most of the show’s broadening horizons and create opportunities for them to explore storylines that go beyond the cobbles of Coronation Street itself.

Currently, in the soap, viewers are watching as a young Hope Stape (Isabella Flanagan) has become fascinated with her dead murderer father John.

Over the past few weeks, people have seen some troubling behaviour from the child as she was engrossed in a tell-all book about her dad’s killings.

Deciding to do a reading of it at school, Hope invites two older girls to try and impress them, although it backfires when she hears them calling her a nut job.

Threatening them with a hammer she stole from the toolbox at home, she later becomes suspended for her aggressive behaviour.

However, in scenes set to air next week, Hope will get to return to school as the councillor later questions Fiz and Tyrone on their family background.

This prompts Tyrone to finally put a ring on Fiz’s finger as he proposes to her after a rollercoaster year.

Saying yes, she admits that she wishes to skip the planning and go straight to the day itself, which her husband-to-be takes on board.

He later confides in Chesney that he’s surprising his fiancée with a Christmas Wedding.

Although a wedding is never that simple in Coronation Street, there could be drama ahead.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITV Hub
