Coronation Streets Ryan turns to drug abuse after acid attack

Coronation Street: Daisy and Ryan have heart-to-heart in hospital

In his younger years, Coronation Street’s Ryan (played by Ryan Prescott) overcame a drug addiction. Between 2012 and 2013, he struggled with use of drugs before leaving to start a new life.

Ryan has been back on the ITV soap for a years, and although he has turned his life around somewhat, he recently underwent a life-changing trauma.

At the end of March, on the day of Daisy Midgeley’s (Charlotte Jordan) wedding to Daniel (Rob Mallard), her deranged stalker Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still) found her and attempted to throw acid at her face.

Ryan heroically jumped between the pair and took the brunt of the attack, falling to the floor and screaming in agony.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, psychologist Mairead Molloy detailed the potential impact of such attacks and explained victims sometimes turn to substance abuse as a means of coping – could Ryan start using drugs again?

In disturbing scenes, Justin arrived at The Rovers, immediately scaring Daisy.

Ryan, who had been helping with preparations, watched on and sprung into action when he saw Justin was about to do something. He instantly fell to the floor, screaming in agony as Justin fled the scene.

Whilst Ryan has since been putting on a brave face in hospital, he has struggled to accept his new reality after being left with life-long injuries and scarring.

Detailing how prominent acid attacks are in real life, psychologist Mairead also talked about the impact on victims.

She stated “almost 100 percent of the time,” survivors experience mental health problems.

The expert said: “Survivors of acid attacks show high levels of psychological distress – including social anxiety and avoidance, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress.

“Emotional trauma is typically more damaging than physical trauma.

“It continues way after the pain of the attack has gone. Even with reconstructive surgery, the memory affects all parts of a person’s life, putting stress on relationships and often leading to depression or substance abuse.”

It seems very possible Ryan will want to find an escape from the harrowing trauma. Having already suffered from addiction in the past, could he turn to drugs once again?

In the latest episode of the soap, Ryan was in better spirits after he believed Daisy’s friend, Crystal (Erin Austen) was still interested in hiring him for a DJ gig despite the accident.

He was also interested in her romantically and believed she reciprocated the feelings, but later scenes showed Crystal telling Daisy to inform Ryan she wasn’t into him and “hadn’t signed up for this”.

Ryan is going to be crushed when he finds out, and having already been rejected by ex, Alya Nazir, (Sair Khan) he may take extreme measures to take his mind off things.

Will Ryan get the support he needs to overcome the ordeal?

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 8pm on ITV.
