Prepare yourselves as next week in Coronation Street, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) will receive the devastating news that her dog, Cerberus, is dying.

*Weeps*

Cerberus has been Evelyn’s companion ever since we met her back in 2018. The beloved pet has become as iconic as other Weatherfield animals but soon, tragedy strikes.

After Evelyn notices that Cerberus hasn’t eaten his dinner, Tyrone (Alan Halsall) decides they should take him along to the vets.

In this new video, we see the moment the vet asks Evelyn if her dog has eaten anything bad recently, but she doesn’t think so.

With a swollen stomach, it’s clear Cerberus is very poorly and needs to stay in for some tests, which begins to worry Tyrone and Evelyn, who are trying to remain strong.

Pretending everything will turn out fine in the end, Evelyn goes to leave the room with Ty, but can’t help returning to give her beloved pooch another hug.

Sadly, it’ll transpire that Cerberus has eaten something he shouldn’t have done – an Eccles cake, which was dropped on the floor by Roy (David Neilson) in the café.

Because raisins are toxic to dogs, Cerberus has to be put to sleep and recently, Maureen Lipman told us that Evelyn’s anger towards Roy’s mishap risks her losing a great friend, as well as losing her dog.

‘Roy is basically the only person who gets Evelyn and she gets him. It is doubly hard because this situation could mean she loses his friendship,’ she explained.

Evelyn soon realises that she can’t stay angry with Roy – who’s devastated by the dog’s death – for long. ‘She feels sorry for him and sends him to Coventry for a while,’ Maureen said, ‘Roy understands about grieving. He gets where she’s coming from, it doesn’t take much to bring her round because she knows where her bread’s best buttered.’
