Davina McCall terrified by wrong contraception advice on TikTok

Davina McCall is turning her attention to the contraceptive pill with a new Channel 4 documentary after sparking a healthcare revolution with her investigation into the menopause.

The TV presenter, 55, is shocked that more than 60 years after the pill was invented, women are still enduring a litany of side effects if they don’t want to fall pregnant.

However, what is more "terrifying" to Davina is the amount of wrong contraception advice available on TikTok.

With doctors overstretched, and social media taking over, young women are increasingly at risk of misinformation.

When Davina looked on TikTok for information about contraception, she was horrified by the misinformation she encountered.

“It is terrifying, these messages,” says Davina. “We all know that we get served a load of old tosh on social media sometimes.

"You see some misinformation on social media, you go to school and tell three girlfriends something, and it’s fact, because you’ve seen it on social media, and then – bang – it’s everywhere.”

Davina does find some hopeful news during her research. DNA sequencing and mapping of women’s genomes could soon predict how contraception might affect you, individually.

“You might be able to see if someone is sensitive to progesterone, or see someone who absorbs hormones more, and so are less likely to be protected by the pill," explains Davina who has fully engrossed herself in the new science.

“We can get to a point where we can test women to see what kind of contraception will suit them the best. That would be amazing! Imagine all the time you’d save – all those years of trying different pills!”

Davina’s menopause documentaries started a national conversation and she hopes this new film does the same and leads to better care for women and better contraceptive options.

“I’ve met so many brilliant people and learned so much making this film and it’s left me feeling quite sad that we are still struggling 60 years after the pill was invented,” says Davina.

“It makes me feel angry too because we deserve better. Better research, better knowledge, better quality of care, more funding. This is a conversation we have to have so let’s start a contraception revolution.”
