Tonight, Martin Clunes said farewell to his beloved character Doc Martin after 18 years as the loveable doctor. It was revealed in September 2020 that the ITV series was coming to an end, with the comedy-drama rounding up Doc Martin’s move to London tonight. After his committed years of service in Cornwall, he decided to take up a job in London but began to have his reservations about leaving when he realised how hard it was going to be. However, fans were left reeling at the way the show ended and took to their social media accounts to express their thoughts.
The final episode saw the villagers throw the Ellinghams a farewell party and Ruth Ellingham (played by Eileen Atkins) helped Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) deal with the news and encouraged her to attend.
Doc tended to one last patient who recently moved to the farm after he dislocated his shoulder and accidentally injected himself with a cow vaccination.
Whilst attending, he soon realised that the house was one he grew up in and had to stop himself from throwing up.
But it seemed that Martin and Louisa Ellingham (Caroline Catz) weren’t going to make it because a farmer has spotted their lost dog.
Worried that it would delay their move, Doc Martin proceeded to put up flyers which would help find Chicken the dog.
On his travels, he bumped into Mrs Tishell who broke down in tears and exclaimed to him: “I’m not ready, I’m not dressed. I want to say goodbye properly!”
Luckily, they soon got a call from the new tenant who injected himself with the cow vaccine explaining that he had seen Chicken running across his fields.
As they spot Chicken, they soon realised that they were being bombarded by a stampede of cows, before he fell and cut his arm open.
Louisa ran to the car to get his medical kit, with Doc Martin explaining to her what to use and how to help him.
In the field, Louisa tried to help her husband to his feet but had no luck, running off to get help elsewhere, leaving him to collapse.
Returning, Lousia and the new tenant came back with a wheelbarrow to get him back to the car, explaining the ambulance was going to be an hour.
After making it to the hospital, the doctor revealed to Louisa that he was fine and was expecting to make a full recovery.

The next day, the new tenant arrived at their home along with Chicken on a lead, leaving their son extremely happy.
Martin soon turned up on their doorstep and revealed that he had discharged himself from the hospital, telling Louisa that being in Port Wenn brought him to Lousia.
They then revealed to the residents that they weren’t going to be leaving Port Wenn, before throwing the for sale sign into the water below them.
Whilst many viewers of the show were anticipating the worst outcome of this episode, some felt let down by the ending.
Twitter user @sal_white79 stated: “How predictable was that ending #DocMartin.”
@Doc_Fan99 fumed: “If your gonna end a series, at least do it better than that! I am underwhelmed with that ending tbh.”
Paris Halsted expressed: “I’m not going to lie, a whole hour of that just for them to say they were staying? I would rather they had left!”
@Winnie_Loons99 exclaimed: “IS THAT IT!! I WAS ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT FOR A LACKLUSTER RESULT! Honestly, I expected more from the series.”
However, not all viewers were disappointed with how the series had ended, with many happy with how they decided to stay.
@deadstar37 praised: “Absolutely loved that #DocMartin kinda sneaky way they done it so IF they wanted to bring it back in the future for a full series they possibly could.”
@Sondotcom21 celebrated: “Best ending ever, brilliant! #DocMartin.” (sic)
Doc Martin is available to watch on ITV Hub.
