Drew Barrymore throws MTV Awards into chaos with last minute pull-out

Drew Barrymore gets emotional talking about protecting her kids

Drew Barrymore has sensationally pulled out of hosting the MTV Movie and TV Awards just three days before the ceremony.

The TV star, in solidarity with the current Writers Guild of America writers’ strike, has cancelled her appearance at the annual event, throwing the show into chaos.

In a statement, the host and actress said: “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike.

“Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me.

“I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

As first reported by Variety, the show has come up with contingency plans and will now figure out a way to continue without a host.

Barrymore has reportedly already agreed to host next year’s event as a sign of good faith with the broadcaster.

Pre-taped videos of Barrymore filmed before the strike began are also still expected to be used to pad out the show’s runtime as initially planned.

It’s not currently known if any of the lined-up presenters of the show will also pull out for the same reason.

The last-minute exit comes as the writers’ strike, which started on Tuesday, continues to grind Hollywood to a halt.

In the wake of this, late night shows have been cancelled, production on shows has stalled, and pickets have emerged outside the major studio lots and offices in New York and Los Angeles.

Stars including Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein, Rob Lowe, SNL’s Bowen Yang, Sex And The City’s Cynthia Nixon, Josh Gad and Clark Gregg have been among those appearing on the picket lines.

Unscripted TV shows like The View and The Talk remain unaffected as they largely don’t rely on writers to function.

This Sunday’s MTV Movie and TV Awards was initially set to be the biggest yet, with a host of A-listers on hand to doll out awards.

Among the confirmed attendees are Gal Gadot, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Halle Bailey.

The cast of Daisy Jones and The Six – including Suki Waterhouse, Riley Keough, Sam Claflin and Camila Morrone – are also scheduled to make an appearance.

The ceremony will be held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
