EastEnders boss promises Cindy Beale's darker edge will be back

Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) is officially back with a bang after a 25 year absence and EastEnders fans, aka us, couldn’t be more thrilled.

Famed for being one of the shows campest, bitchiest and most downright insane characters of all time, we’re hoping it won’t be long until her darker side starts to shine through again.

It can be difficult to bring a character back after so long, recognising that they will have inevitably developed as a person while also remaining true to what fans loved so much in the first place, but show boss Chris Clenshaw seems to have it covered.

He promises that we will certainly start to see ‘hints of the old Cindy’ over the coming months, and to be quite honest, we can’t wait!

‘She’s become a little softer after everything that’s gone on and living for 25 years with a different identity and living a lie, as well, to her other family,’ Chris revealed.

‘What becomes apparent later in the year when she returns to Walford, it doesn’t take long before we see hints of the old Cindy Beale.

‘She’s still the same Cindy at her core, she’s just had a hell of a journey since we last saw her as well.’

One thing that certainly won’t be changing any time soon is Cindy’s hatred for former mother-in-law Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth).

According to Chris, we’re in for a proper treat when these two get together again.

‘There’s some absolute dynamite between Cindy and Kathy,’ he teased.

We’re picturing hair pulling. Classic soap slaps. Witty one liners. More ‘back from the dead’ jokes than you could shake a stick at. Did we mention that we CAN’T WAIT?

Actress Michelle Collins is also eager to stay true to Cindy’s original character, and urges fans not to ‘dismiss her straight away’.

‘There’s a lot of layers there, which is great for me as an actor, it’s what you want. I’m excited to see all these things played out.

‘She’s got to explain to her daughters why she went away. It’s difficult. She’s got to explain to Ian’s mum where did she go. I’m exhausted even talking about it!

‘I hope people won’t kind of dismiss her straight away and will just understand what this woman has been through and try and have some sort of redemption.

‘But obviously I still want to have that edge to her which I think people want from her.’
