EastEnders boss reveals Jay is set to bond with unlikely person after Lola death
EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw has revealed that Jay Brown is set to find friendship with an "unlikely person" in upcoming scenes.
Lola Pearce, played by Danielle Harold, died last month after battling terminal brain cancer – leaving her husband, Jay, played by Jamie Borthwick, and young daughter, Lexi, heartbroken.
Viewers of the BBC One soap had been dreading the episode for weeks, which came after hairdresser and mother of one, Lola, was diagnosed with an incurable brain cancer last year.
With Jay now heartbreakingly a widower, EastEnders boss Chris has teased what is next for the character.
Speaking to press, Chris said: "Billy, Jamie, Ben and Lexi all pull together and are there for each other, but that won't last forever. Jay will find friendship with an unlikely person…"
It comes as Jay actor Jamie, 28, teased what's next for his character himself at the 2023 British Soap Awards.
Talking about if his character could ever find love again, Jamie told Metro that he wasn't sure but revealed he has a meeting with EastEnders boss Chris to discuss his next storylines.
He said: "I’ve had scenes with other females but nothing of any value in that way. He’s not getting [into a relationship] with them."
Jamie added to the publication about how powerful Lola's storyline has been: "I don’t know how many messages I’ve had from people who lost a relative or a widow, or are suffering themselves."
He added: "So, to everyone who sent a message or said a lovely thing, we all really appreciate it. Just thank you ever so much."
It comes as Danielle won Best Leading Performer at the event for her heartbreakingly authentic portrayal of battling terminal cancer as Lola. EastEnders also won Best British Soap.
The award held a special poignancy to Danielle, as her final scenes had aired on the soap just days before she bagged the coveted award – something which allowed her to end her time on EastEnders on a high.
Accepting the award, Danielle said: “This isn’t for me. This is definitely for every single person who’s worked with me along the way who has been directly affected by brain tumours, people who are suffering from brain tumours.
“Their time has been so precious to them and even more to me and I can’t thank all of you enough for helping me.”
