EastEnders’ Linda Carter (played by Kellie Bright) was finally reunited with her childhood sweetheart Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) on Christmas Day but her happy ending was brutally cut short. Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press, Linda star Kellie revealed the one thing she would change about her onscreen ex-husband’s tragic exit.

In the Christmas Day episode, Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) drives away from Walford to avoid being arrested after her lies were finally exposed and Mick and Linda were reunited in a touching moment.

Not wanting her to get away with the pain she’s inflicted, Mick and Linda follow her to some cliffs before eventually getting her to stop the car.

However, after a fight ensues, Linda jumps back into the car with Janine to convince her to hand herself in but the pair accidentally drive the car over the cliff-edge.

Mick jumps into the sea and saves his pregnant wife before heading back out to sea to save Linda, however, unbeknownst to him, his ex-wife has already made it out of the water.

Before Mick’s final scene, he shared a kiss with Linda as the pair embraced admitting they still loved each other.

Linda star Kellie reflected on the momentous episode and her character’s emotional reunion with The Vic landlord.

The EastEnders star said: “I’m very bad at being impartial and being able to sort of sit back and watch something that I’m involved in.

“I thought watching it that the episode as a whole was really brilliant and I think it’s a really good Christmas episode.

“The latter part of the episode obviously involves an awful lot of stunt people, and not a lot of us, so I’m always intrigued by that.

“I’m always curious as to how that’s going to work, how it’s going to cut together because our bit is so disjointed, it’s really sort of a bitty thing to film so I love watching all of that.”

Kellie continued: “The scene that I was holding out for was the scene between Mick and Linda and if I could have made that 10 times longer I probably would have done.

“But it had to fit within the episode and it was a beautiful moment.

“There was such a lot of real raw emotion tied up in the filming of the last episode for me.

“I’m very proud to be part of it. I love EastEnders at Christmas. I love filming it. I love being part of it.

“It always feels special and and it does feel very much like it’s gone full circle because that was when we came into the show.”

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw agreed it was “really important” to “reunite” Mick and Linda.

“If you know the history of these two characters, they are the love of each other’s lives, that’s in their DNA,” he said.

“And what was what was what was a challenge for us was to find a way to exit Mick while keeping hold of Linda because this Mick wouldn’t leave Linda and wouldn’t leave his kids so that was incredibly difficult but we did reconcile them. I think that’s a beautiful moment.

“It’s been so long since we’ve seen that and it’s so beautiful and it just it takes you back to to those years where they were so gorgeous.

“So while it was one scene and two kisses. I think it’s a beautiful way to end their story and their journey and as I think Danny said it is ultimately it’s a love story that end tragically.”

EastEnders airs on BBC One from Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm.
