EastEnders Max star has no plans for return after OAP hit him with handbag

EastEnders actor Jake Wood has revealed that he has no plans to return to the BBC soap just yet.

The 50-year-old star quit his role as Max Branning last year, following a series of explosive storylines, including being accused of the murder of Lucy Beale and an affair with his son's wife Stacey Slater.

It was the affair storyline that led an OAP to hit the actor with her handbag, after she bumped into the soap hunk in a supermarket.

Jake told the Sun: "I got hit by an old woman with her handbag in a supermarket once. She was telling me to leave Stacey alone.

"That was quite funny really.

"She didn't hit me hard but I did try and tell her I was there with my family and that I'm not really Max, but I don't think she was listening."

During his time on the soap, Jake's character Max also had four marriages and 10 affairs, before departing Albert Square for good in 2021.

Jake has since said that he has no plans to return just yet, adding: "I don't feel I have to prove anything and I don't want to be working for workings' sake."

Despite exiting EastEnders, the actor added that he has fond memories of working with his soap co-stars, including Tanya actress Jo Joyner, Phil Mitchell actor Steve McFadden and Stacey Slater star Lacey Turner.

He said: "I’m really proud of the work we did over the years."

Since departing Albert Square, Jake has made the move back into theatre after 18 years away from the stage.

He most recently appeared in the West End production 2:22 – A Ghost Story, alongside musician and actress Lily Allen.

Never say never though, as the actor added that there is always room for a return to EastEnders in the future.

"I never got bored playing him…although the scene when I was buried alive was tough.

It was hard graft, but I’m really pleased that they’ve left the door open for the character to return.

"Never say never."
