EastEnders spoilers: Two weddings, a panto and a funeral as Dot is laid to rest
EastEnders changed forever when the iconic actress June Brown MBE died – and now it’s the final farewell for the fictional characters and the show’s fans, with Dot’s funeral airing next week.
It’s an emotional time for Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) as she leads proceedings and prepares to deliver an emotional eulogy in tribute; but is she able to go through with it?
A wave of returning characters join for the notable episodes; and more drama will follow as there are shocks in store, particularly for Dotty Cotton (Milly Zero).
Meanwhile, Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) continues to be on edge as the wedding approaches – and she will do anything to ensure that she gets her man…
Monday December 12
It’s the morning of Dot’s funeral, and Sonia still hasn’t written her eulogy. Lauren arrives for the funeral and joins Ricky, Jack and Sonia and they reminisce about Dot, and Sonia admits her writer’s block.
In a bid for inspiration, Sonia uses Dot’s spare key to the laundrette to let herself in, and Martin finds her there.
He comforts Sonia, who is inconsolable over the unwritten eulogy and says she can’t do it but Martin tries to encourage her to speak from the heart.
Later, the residents of Albert Square line the streets to watch say goodbye to Dot Branning. Sharon’s surprised and delighted when Colin arrives to pay his respects. Sonia and the rest of Dot’s family are overwhelmed to see the outpouring of love for Dot as she leaves Albert Square for the last time.
At the church, the mourners gather – including Mary and Disa. Mary reveals that Lofty is en route, and Sharon is touched that they all came.
Lofty arrives at the church very late as Sonia is about to deliver the eulogy.
Kathy is surprised to see Disa at the church, and they share a hug. Disa says she has a lot to thank Dot for. She reflects on how Dot took people in – including Disa and Donna – when others turned their back.
Tuesday December 13
The mourners arrive at The Vic for Dot’s wake, where Jack pays tribute to Dot as Jim’s true love. Colin tells Sharon about his life.
Outside Sonia bumps into Reiss Colwell, who reveals he’s Dot’s great nephew. They go to No.25 and share a cuppa but are interrupted when Jack and Patrick bring the wake to the house.
Outside in the Square, Felix gives directions to Dot’s place to a man in a flash car. Colin exits the wake with Kathy, who recognises the driver as Barry.
After an emotional day, Sonia has a moment with Reiss – and takes him to bed.
Linda’s heart is in her mouth at the sight of Lauren.
Lauren has a go at Linda for breaking her dad’s heart. Janine presses Mick to tell Linda about the wedding, but he wants to wait until after the funeral.
Spiteful Janine asks Kathy to cater their reception, knowing Linda can hear her. Later, Mick blurts out the wedding news, and Linda says she already knows. She says that if he’s happy, she’ll be happy for him. Is he?
Kat and Alfie reminisce about Nana Moon – reflecting on her dying wish that they would get together.
Later, Kat is frustrated when Phil refuses to pick up her calls, and Alfie asks her if she’s happy with her decision to marry him.
At No.25, Sharon and Kat start rowing but soon begin bonding over the challenges of being Phil’s other half. Kat tells Sharon that she will find love again, but Sharon says she doesn’t need a man.
Wednesday December 14
Sonia asks Reiss to stay in Walford to be there as a support at Dot’s will reading, fearing she may be made homeless when Dotty inherits the house.
Alfie starts the panto auditions and is determined to cast Kat as Snow White opposite him as the Prince. Kat fails to show up at the auditions, and Honey wows everyone with her audition.
Kat eventually arrives after Tommy begs her, and Alfie tries to cast her as Snow White but Sharon overrules him and tells Honey she’s got the part.
Fed up with Linda’s constant presence at The Vic, Janine demands that Mick buys her out. Ben’s upbeat as he discusses Lola’s appointment with the brain tumour specialist, but Callum is more cautious.
Thursday December 15
Sonia is nervous ahead of the will reading. Meanwhile, Dotty is excited at the thought of selling the house and travelling around the world.
Dot’s solicitor Kenneth Foskett arrives and divulges Dot’s last wishes to Sonia, Jack, Dotty and Reiss.
Janine keeps pushing Mick to get a bank loan to buy Linda out. After chatting to Linda, Mick tells Janine that he can’t take the pub away from her because it’ll send her spiralling but suggests an alternative.
