Emmerdale Rhona star Zoë Henry almost lost soap role to co-stars real wife

Emmerdale star Zoë Henry made her debut as Rhona Goskirk in 2001 and has been a core member of the cast ever since.

The actress, 49, had a big decision to make during Monday's episode (April 10) of the ITV soap, but recently admitted things could've turned out very differently as she almost missed out on the role completely.

Zoe revealed she was up against Paddy Kirk star Dominic Brunt's wife, Joanne Mitchell.

The soap star explained bosses decided to step in and give the role to her because they thought it would be "weird" having Joanne play the love interest of Marlon.

She told Inside Soap: "I have an interesting fact for you. The person up against me in the audition [for Rhona] was Dominic’s wife, Joanne Mitchell. But I think because Paddy and Marlon are best mates in the show, they thought that would be weird!"

Joanne didn't miss out completely however as she has starred on Emmerdale in four different roles.

The 51-year-old made her soap debut in 2003, playing the role of DS Karen Barnborough in two episodes.

She also had minor parts as Midwife Yeo and Susan Davies before landing her most notable role as Liv Flaherty's mother, Sandra.

The part was recast to Joanne when Sandra was reintroduced in 2016 and she made further appearances as the character in 2021 and 2022.

Last week, Rhona was stunned when her ex-husband, Gus Malcolm, turned up in the village.

But this was only the beginning as Gus then dropped a bombshell on Rhona, asking if he could use her frozen embryos so that he could have a baby with his new wife, Lucy.

During Monday's episode, Gus turned up at the Woolpack with Lucy while Rhona was attempting to enjoy a family meal, prompting Mary to berate him for what he was asking of her daughter.

Everyone involved was left utterly speechless however, when Rhona gave her ex-husband and his new wife the green light to use her embryos.
