Emmerdale star teases permanent return as Diane Sugden
When Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) left Emmerdale last year, it looked like we’d seen the last of her as she packed her suitcase and headed for a new life in the sunshine.
Well, she deserved it after 22 years of being at the heart of the show, including 17 years as landlady of the Woolpack.
So it was quite a surprise to hear that Diane was one of the characters who would be returning as part of the show’s 50th anniversary celebrations – and Elizabeth says she was very happy to be asked.
‘I was really pleased to be asked to come back to Emmerdale to celebrate its 50th,’ she told us. ‘There’s a lot of people that I still know that I was really pleased to see again.’
Elizabeth reveals that her character enjoys catching up with old friends, but there’s one person in particular she’s come to see. ‘Diane has a great time catching up with people in the village but she has come back especially to see Faith (Sally Dexter) whom she was great friends with.’
Diane’s return is sure to add even more poignancy to Faith’s storyline, as we know that Faith hasn’t got very long to live and has already shared some emotional scenes with some of her Emmerdale friends such as Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) and Brenda Walker (Lesley Dunlop).
Seeing her old friend Diane again is sure to be a deeply moving moment for Faith.
Elizabeth’s farewell to the show last year seemed to be very final, with the actress saying at the time, ‘ I now feel the time has come to say goodbye. Emmerdale will always remain special to me. I’ll miss everyone dearly.’
But now that she’s been lured back for the 50th anniversary, could there be a chance of a more permanent return for Diane Sugden? Elizabeth hints as much when she says, ‘Who knows, she may return again one day!’
