This Morning: Charley Webb on difficulties with mum's Alzheimer's

Speaking to hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, Emmerdale’s Charley Webb revealed she first noticed changes in her mum when she would forget quite significant things.

Although people initially dismissed Charley’s concerns, the ITV star knew something wasn’t right as she confessed it was a struggle trying to get a diagnosis as her mum was in denial at the time.

Curious to know what happens after the diagnosis, Dermot asked: “This isn’t an NHS issue, it becomes a social care issue I suppose.”

Aware that Charley would’ve had to fund the care for her mother, the This Morning host questioned how hard that was.

She commented: “It’s very hard, I feel like when you get the diagnosis it’s like, ‘there you go, off you go now’. You’re like, ‘where do I start?’”

The former Emmerdale star told Alison and Dermot there was no support or help provided after her mum’s diagnosis.

Charley added: “It was shocking actually. For me and my siblings, it’s just been the most horrendous time, like eight years of hell basically, so far.

“She’s now gone into a home and that was the hardest decision that we ever had to make, it was really hard.”

Admitting it’s taken a while to publicly speak about her mum’s health, the soap star touched on how she’s lost the woman she used to know.

Charley added: “You lose them right before your eyes and I think that’s the hardest thing.

“You grieve for the person that they were, even though they’re still there.

“She’s like a little girl now and it’s taken me a long time to be able to speak about it.”

The 35-year-old’s appearance on This Morning speaking about her personal experience with Alzheimer’s comes after news of Julie Goodyear being diagnosed with Dementia.

Known for playing Bet Lynch in Coronation Street, the 81-year-old decided to seek medical advice after “suffering forgetfulness”.

Her husband Scott Brand recently revealed the heartbreaking news as he said: “We now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.

“We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out.

“Inevitably, she is recognised and fans love to meet her – and she them – but she can get confused, particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand.”
