Emmerdale actress Zoe Henry has portrayed village vet Rhona Goskirk for two decades and her real-life husband Jeff Hordley has starred on the soap as Cain Dingle, on and off, for 22 years. While their characters’ lives rarely cross paths, Zoe has opened up to Express.co.uk about the realities of working on set with Jeff.
Zoe and Jeff tied the knot in August 2003 and they have two children together called Violet and Stan.
Zoe’s character Rhona recently got married to Marlon Dingle (played by Mark Charnock) in an Emmerdale special.
During the episode, Zoe and Jeff had the rare opportunity to share scenes together in the village church and at the Woolpack.
Zoe has exclusively opened up to Express.co.uk about starring in the same serial drama as her husband.
She said: “It’s the day job, that sounds really boring but it is and it’s nice as we got to travel in together and home together [for the wedding].
“It’s a boring answer but it is just our job, I think sometimes you just dread those long days.
“But as we said, this was actually a really lovely couple of weeks of filming, so it’s nice to see Jeff about really.”
The characters’ stories are hardly ever intertwined as Cain is loved up with Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) and Zoe has been caring for Marlon who suffered a stroke in March.
“I probably won’t see him for another couple of years unless maybe one of us dies – oh no I won’t be there,” Zoe joked.
Zoe and Jeff actually met before they were cast on Emmerdale when they attended drama school together.
Jeff has previously said: “We met at drama school in 1994. I saw Zoe and realised she was the girl for me.”
He proposed to Zoe on the day she won an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards.
When their children were young, their characters’ storylines were filmed at different times so they could share childcare duties.
When Zoe recently appeared on Lorraine, she opened up about her and her husband’s passion for gardening.
Speaking her allotment, Zoe told ITV viewers: “We often do online learning together.
“This time, Jeff’s been amazing. He’s just taking the weight of what’s going on at home.
“Obviously we’ve got two kids, two dogs, we’ve got an allotment and he’s just managing all of that.”
Jeff is featuring heavily in the ITV soap at the moment as his on-screen mother Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) is battling terminal cancer.
He wants to find hospice care for her and is unaware his wife Moira has promised to help end Faith’s life.
Meanwhile, Rhona is looking after Marlon as he continues his long road to recovery.
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV.
