Escape to the Chateau will come to an end after series nine, stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge have confirmed.

The hit Channel 4 show follows the former Lieutenant Colonel and his wife as they renovated an idyllic chateau nestled in the French countryside.

Launching in 2016, the popular series showed the ups and downs of the renovation of the ruined property located in the small market town of Martigné-sur-Mayenne.

Dick and Angel had initially paid £280,000 when they bought the dilapidated castle, which has 45 bedrooms, 78 windows, 12 acres and one moat, back in 2015.

In a recent newsletter to fans the couple announced the ninth season would be "starting soon in the UK".

However, the headline was "The Ninth and Final Series of Escape to the Chateau".

A statement from production company Two Rivers Media also confirmed the end of Escape to the Chateau but also teased there was more to come.

The message read: "The 2022 season will be packed with more heart-warming family adventures, innovative renovations and spectacular celebrations from Dick and Angel and their children Arthur and Dorothy.

"But this year will also have special significance for, whilst it is not goodbye, it will be au revoir from the Chateau, because 2023 will see Dick and Angel focusing on their Secret France (wt) adventures."

It has been reported that Dick and Angel will be focusing on a new show, although details are being kept under wraps.

The pair promised there would also be "so much to see and so much more fun to be had", while thanking all fans who had supported them.

They added: "Escape to the Chateau has been our family journey; our decision to buy a chateau with no water, electricity, heating or sewage has taken us on an adventure of a lifetime and we could never have imagined what would unfold.

"The good, the bad and the ugly…we have cherished every second and love that we have a visual record to show Arthur and Dorothy when they’re older."

Fans have since taken to Twitter to share their heartbreak over the news.
