Eurovision icon Verka Seduchka kicks SHOE into crowd during energetic show
Eurovision: Ukrainian singer Verka loses her shoe in audience
The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final kicked off in style in Liverpool tonight – with performer Verka Seduchka taking that sentiment a little too literally by lobbing their shoe into the audience.
The Ukrainian drag act took to the stage during the opening number to perform the iconic Dancing Lasha Tumbai, which they became famed for during the 2007 competition.
In an opening performance celebrating the biggest and best of Ukraine’s acts over the years, Seduchka – real name Andriy Mykhailovych Danylko – gave a high-energy performance complete with their “mother” playing on bass guitar and over a dozen dancers doing the routine.
At the end of the song, marking the end of the opening number, Seduchka was seen dancing up and down with joy, kicking their legs in the air.
But in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, their celebration was done with such force one of their shoes went flying into the air and into the crowd watching.
Commentator Mel Giedroyc just about noticed the moment, asking viewers at home: “Did Verka just lose a shoe?!”
Naturally, viewers at home were quick to notice, and found the moment hilarious.
“Verka yeeting her shoe and immediately making #Eurovision history. Iconic,” wrote @theeKov.
“Does whomever catches #Verka shoe get to be her next granny?” added @mabbes1408.
“Imagine going to watch #Eurovision final and ten minutes in you get hit in the face with a rogue shoe!” added @lozraus.
This year’s Eurovision has broken tradition by being held in the UK, as it’s usually held in the previous winning country.
Sadly, due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, it was deemed unsafe to hold the contest, so the UK – who came in second place with Sam Ryder last year – is holding on behalf of the country.
Mae Muller will be representing the UK with her catchy track, I Wrote A Song.
The winner will be announced by the end of the evening, earning a trophy and the opportunity for their country to present next year’s contest.
Eurovision Song Contest Grand Finale is available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
