First ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Trailer Sees Snow and Lucy Gray’s Complicated Relationship
Set 64 years before the Jennifer Lawrence films, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ centers on Snow and Lucy Gray who form a connection before the 10th Annual Reaping Ceremony.
AceShowbiz -The first trailer for “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” made its way out at CinemaCon 2023 on Thursday, April 27. Also being made available online for fans’ viewing pleasure, the video hints at the complicated relationship of Coriolanus “Coryo” Snow (Tom Blyth) and Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).
The two appear to form a romantic connection as teenagers, playing in the water together and walking in the forest. But Snow is soon faced with conflicted feelings when Lucy Gray is chosen as a tribute from District 12 for the 10th Annual Reaping Ceremony, with him assigned as her unwilling mentor.
“There have been some changes this year,” Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), the creator of the Hunger Games, tells Snow. “Your role is to turn these children into spectacles, not survivors.”
Meanwhile, Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis), the head gamemaker of the 10th annual Hunger Games, ominously warns Snow, “What happens in there, fueled with the terror of becoming prey. See how quickly we become predator? See how quickly civilization disappears?”
Following the trailer screening, producer Nina Jacobson and director Francis Lawrence talked about the film. “It is such a completely original Lucy moment,” Jacobson told Variety about the story. “She’s such a different character from Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence). She’s such a performer. Katniss is the opposite. This is a woman who loves and lives to perform. To see the connection there, the history that she represents, and to think that Katniss Everdeen grew up knowing about Lucy Gray and this moment, it was just a great kind of microcosm of both how much of a new ground it is and how rooted it is in what we’ve seen, but in this backward-looking way.”
“I just thought it’d be really interesting if we create a history of it so that maybe she didn’t come up with it on her own. Maybe she’d heard about this girl from a long time ago having done the same thing,” Lawrence added. “We’re also trying to find the ways of linking it to the other movies and into the things that people love.”
According to the official logline of the film, “Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and a snake.”
Jason Schwartzman stars as Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, the first television host of the Hunger Games, with Burn Gorman, Fionnula Flanagan and Ashley Liao also in the cast. The movie, based on the 2020 novel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” by Suzanne Collins, is scheduled for release on November 17 in the United States.
