Four in a Bed row as hotel owner accuses guest of ‘personal attack’
Host brands ‘warmth’ feedback ‘a personal attack’
Channel 4 afternoon favourite Four in a Bed sees B&B owners testing out each other’s hotels before scoring each one on different criteria. In the end, one is crowned the winner. The final instalment of the week saw the groups of guests given the opportunity to ask about some of the feedback they had received and paying what they believe the price should have been, and the tension was high as James Warner accused co-star Claire Hart of launching a “personal attack” on him in her critical responses.
Claire had given some of the most negative feedback throughout the week in her responses to all the hosts.
In James’ feedback form, she wrote: “A lack of warmth,” under the host section, explaining: “Maybe he just needs to be a bit more confident”.
While reading through his feedback, a shocked James was speechless when he got to Claire’s critique.
“Now, I’m really shocked about that,” he stated in the previous episode.
He admitted: “I don’t really know where she’s coming from with that.”
On Friday, he explained to the cameras before meeting with the others: “My biggest gripe was Claire’s comment on my hosting skills.
“Now that’s something I really pride myself on. She put down that I’m not warm and I’m not confident.
“It’s something that I feel is more of a personal attack rather than anything constructive.”
At the table, the atmosphere between the two was already awkward after James had made some complaints about his stay at Claire’s hotel.
The other contestants described the tension as being so thick it could be “cut with a knife”.
Repeating Claire’s written remarks about her stay at his guesthouse, The Apollo Inn in Derbyshire, James stated: “‘Lacking in warmth and confidence…’ so, it definitely was a blow to me and it seems as though that’s more of a personal attack rather than a comment on my hosting skills.”
“I didn’t feel that you felt natural greeting me, somehow,” Claire offered. “I felt a bit awkward, that’s just a feeling that I had when I came in.

“I got a different feeling when I was welcomed by the others.”
“OK,” James remarked, looking a bit puzzled as the other guests watched the awkward interaction.
Claire continued: “I probably have the least feeling of connection with you than from everybody here.
“I’m quite a soft person and I find you a harder person, I suppose. Maybe it’s the reflection on me, too.”
“OK. Well, I’ll take that,” James replied before the pair talked further about their thoughts while alone.
“There’s obviously a disparity between the nature of James versus myself,” Claire told the camera. “I was just honest about it and it wasn’t personal.”
James, meanwhile, commented: “I don’t think Claire’s given me a good explanation as to why she marked me down on hosting.
“I think it’s just Claire, I just don’t think we gel at all.” Luckily for James, his hotel impressed the others and he ended up being crowned the winner.
Four in a Bed airs weekdays at 5pm on Channel 4.
