GBBO fans ‘delighted’ as David Schwimmer wins celebrity Bake Off in clean sweep
The Great British Bake Off kicked off with a bang on Sunday night, as the popular Channel 4 baking show returned with a brand new celebrity series in order to raise funds for Stand Up To Cancer.
In the first round of the charity edition, Friends superstar David Schwimmer took on Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson, comedian Rose Matafeo and actor Tom Davis as they were tasked with baking six savoury pies, six delicious macarons, and a 3D meringue of a Celebrity fail scene.
Yet after 60 minutes of nail biting baking in which David won every single challenge, it came as no surprise when the sitcom star bagged the coveted title of Star Baker at the end of the show, and walked away with his very own Stand Up To Cancer apron in recognition of his impressive culinary skills.
Immediately after the results had aired, fans raced to social media to commend David for his well deserved win, with many fans at home shocked at how talented he was in the kitchen.
“David's Star Baker is so well deserved, he's been an utter delight!,” penned one impressed fan.
A second soon agreed, writing: “So well deserved. Incredibly funny and humble, just a genuinely nice guy."
Meanwhile a third soon penned: “What!? David Schwimmer won this celebrity Bake Off in a clean sweep: Paul handshake, Technical, and Star Baker! What?!”
Before a fourth added: “Kudos to all of the Celebs in the tent with David Schwimmer because I would literally not be able to focus on the baking at all.”
Even GBBO themselves got in on the action, as they hilariously wrote: "The one where David Schwimmer entered the Bake Off Tent and walked away with a Hollywood Handshake and Star Baker,” in a direct nod to the episode titles of his hit sitcom Friends.
It wasn’t the only subtle reference to the show either, as one fan cheekily penned: “Not surprised to see David Schwimmer won GBBO stand up to cancer. His sister Monica was a highly successful chef in New York.”
David’s character in the comedy, Ross Geller, famously had a professional chef for a sister, although even she may have had a run for her money when tasked with David’s own culinary prowess.
The show marked the first in the latest series of the popular baking show, which aims to raise vital funds to help fund cancer research and support services, in the special celebrity edition.
