Happy Valley fans praise comeback as ‘chilling’ opening leaves viewers hooked

BBC's police drama Happy Valley made an epic return on Sunday night and fans couldn't get enough of the chilling opening scene.

Actress Sarah Lancaster made her comeback as no-nonsense Sergeant Catherine Cawood who was determined to get to the bottom of any wrong doing thrown at her.

But in the first few minutes of the show, things took a terrifying and rather dark turn when Catherine stumbled across human remains.

Calling for backup, fans were eager to find out what else was in store for the series as they headed over to Twitter to praise the impactful drama.

Sharing their thoughts, one social media user penned: "That’s got to be the best first fifteen minutes of a series opener in a long, long time. Wham , bam thank you ma’am. No faffing or hanging about. Straight in. The way good tele SHOULD be."

Another penned: "This opening scene sums up #HappyValley to a tee. The setting, the humour, the darkness and anchored by a pitch perfect performance."

A third said: "You will not find a better opening three minutes to a TV show anywhere than that."

Meanwhile a fourth exclaimed: "#HappyValley is back! Opening scene indicates an excellent series. Can't believe it's been so long since the last one!"

Seven years after the last series, executive producer Will Johnston explained that series creator Sally Wainwright and lead protagonist Sarah Lancashire have agreed that the drama "would only return once more" while speaking at a BFI screening.

He said: "It definitely isn't coming back – and again this is [from] Sally and Sarah who completely and rightly feel that you can have too much of a good thing," he said.

"We're really not doing any more. You're a few weeks away from the ending but when you get to it, I really hope you'll feel content that if that's the last you ever see of the characters of Happy Valley, it was a big way to go out."

"A series like this returning, the actors are in conversation very early about their characters and the way that things move forward," he added.
