The Confessions of Frannie Langton is on ITVX and the series touches on themes of slavery and the London elite. The TV adaptation follows former slave Frannie (played by Karla-Simone Spence) as she is brought from Jamaica to London to work for a wealthy couple. When is The Confessions of Frannie Langton set?
The series sees Frannie fall hopelessly in love with her mistress after she is sent into service at her husband’s household.
The pair soon realise they have a lot in common and their relationship turns intimate.
When the series begins, Frannie has been arrested on suspicion of murder as key members of the Benham household are found dead.
Frannie is seen laying next to the dead body of her lover, whom she swears she did not kill.
The series is set in the early 1800s with Georgian London as its backdrop.
Actress Karla-Simone detailed the show’s plot, saying: “It’s a period drama, set in the 1800s.
“It’s Frannie’s story and she wants the world to know what she went through from her own account.
“When Frannie arrives in England from Jamaica with John Langton (Steven Mackintosh) she is technically a free woman.
“She could run into this new world, but where would she go? Frannie is a survivor.
“She has made difficult decisions in order to survive.
“So in that moment, she chooses to stick with the devil she knows. A choice that has led her to where we find her at the beginning of the show.”
She explained how society looked at women like Frannie during that time period.
“In 1820s England, rich white men were in the highest level of society.
“Everyone listens to what they have to say and they are very well respected.
“No one was really interested in what a woman had to say, they had to fight to be seen.
“Now imagine being a Jamaican Black woman, in a white world. There’s extra layers of oppression that one has to fight.”
The series was filmed in and around Yorkshire, with locations including Duncombe Park and Dewsbury Town Hall.
The synopsis for the book reads: “Crowds gather at the gates of the Old Bailey to watch as Frannie Langton, maid to Mr and Mrs Benham, goes on trial for their murder.
“The testimonies against her are damning – slave, whore, seductress. And they may be the truth.
“But they are not the whole truth.”
The story follows Frannie as she attempts to prove her innocence and share her love story.
